So, first thing's first let's just establish this... I'm a bedroom creator, a knob twiddler, a software kiddie etc.

But electronic music is my absolute passion, and after spending many years watching great live sets coupled with my experiences in Ibiza last week... I've decided to invest my time and money into the complimentary art of DJ'ing. I'm pretty much all set to go-- just wondering if there's anyone else in this community that DJ's in their spare time either as a hobby or even as a profession.

If so, what equipment are you rocking? What sort of venues/style do you mainly play and/or prefer? Any tips or special recommendations?

Excuse me "son" but hip-hop DJ'ing and scratching are not what I'm even talking about.

They're a very minor area of disc-jockeying, I'm more interested in mixing and playing live electronica sets so people can actually dance and wiggle to my tunes, rather than just listen to MP3's in their room.

Read moar before spewing out your 'witty' interjections.

I wanna spin, but aint cool enough in school to rent stuff, DJ at their parties then learn with the rentals, and I'm too poor to spend $800 on a set of TT's, but I really wanna start.

Yep, it's very expensive to get into from scratch (no pun intended), best bet is to use the gear at your local social club or to have a fiddle with some friend's gear. If you're good enough to get a residence or a few slots at a local bar/club then you're probably set with their sound-system and hardware, but of course that overlooks the point of actually practising and gaining experience in the first place . You could probably get set-up with a full 'starter' lowend rig for about $1000-- bare essentials of a mixer, 2x audio source and some monitor speakers with amplifier. Very low-end though!

I really want me some Pioneer CDJ1000's- these were what all of the superclubs in Ibiza had fitted (most of them had 4x !) and it definitely seems as though they're the future of industry-standard DJ'ing. Vinyls seem to be fading out now that DSP's and software can 'treat' lossy audio to play at vinyl qualities. Plus the fact I have a 300Gb mp3 library means investing in some CD-inputs rather than decks will save me huge bucks in buying a vinyl collection!

Yeah, back when I was hunting, I settled on to Stanton T.80's, (Not sure of mixer, prolly Vestax) and Torq, I only managed to scrap together $600 and bought a new computer instead

As far as School Gear's concerned, the only gear I really have access to is a botom of the line Denon CDJ, there's a slightly better pair of CDJ's in the store, but I;ve no clue when I'd get time to practice, during class I'm in class before and after school/lunch there's 50 ppl in there.

My mom was a DJ. Pretty much started the club scene around here with my dad (Also a former DJ)..
My uncle used to DJ too.

I got one of my mom's Technics with a Shure M44-7 cartridge. (bought myself.)

Since I only got one table, I can't do a whole lot. My dad uses the other one.

Actually dude Mutant had a point; if you're going to ask a question ask it in a way people understand instead of overusing jargon. It makes average joes like Mutant and myself feel like dumbasses.

I'm also a hardcore electronic music aficionado. I love pretty much any form of electronic music. I actually started to learn to spin on a friend's set this summer. But to be honest, spinning isn't in my interest. I'm good at finding rare tracks and whatnot, but my taste is so wide and varied that I could never put together a decent set. I'd much rather be a producer, I enjoy creating the music rather than combining other people's.

Good luck with it! It takes tons of practice and perseverance.

She's kinda on and off..

Her stuff on the Pendulum part was horrible, in my opinion, but other times she's amazing.

Perhaps the terminology and things that I referred to implied that you didn't 'spin'- as the thread title asked .

Not every thread is meant to be posted in by every member, no? I'm sure some of you don't try and flamebait a thread-starter in the DST because you don't understand the complexity of the economic crisis, or the political goings on of some faraway state. And since when did 'initiative' curl up in a ball and die; it's hardly a hard thing to have on the Internet with a Google toolbar 5 centimetres above each and every thread.

Thanks for the videos- they were great to watch Some really good examples of hip-hop style turntablism.

These are the sort of electronic mix-sets I've witnessed recently (although not this exact video!) and this is the sort of stuff I want to do. It's basically 4xCD input source, 2x old school vinyl decks for the rarer tracks, and a bunch of mixers / mixing software / DSP and pre-processing stuff. Unbelievable.

(Youtube obviously lets down the low-range bass quality of the actual music, etc.etc.)

Hats off to Hawtin, minimal master!

I recently saw Ellen Allien play at Amnesia in Ibiza and she absolutely blew the roof off. I think she was a supporting act as well...

I think her and a few other German microhouse / bpitch artists are really on fire at the moment in the electronic scene.

Ok that's true, I retract my statement... sort of. It's only because they're German. German electronic is my favorite kind (followed closely by the English and possibly the Norwegians).

Yes.

@ Uzique--my friend's a budding DJ. He's setting up some gigs, made a few mix CD's, actually from a single track cut with no pause. It's bloody cool.

If you want the best software to do that, my suggestion, based upon what he uses, would be MixMeister Fusion. Make sure your comp has 2 sound cards, and you can make a live mix, while previewing it ahead on headphones. It's all about digital now, vinyl+CD are revoluted.
I like pie.
