free trade is what makes globalization possible.  its why we get call centers in new delhi when we live in montana.

military intervention and economic policy go hand in hand.
Not always.  With the U.S., Russia, and sometimes even China, yes.  With smaller countries, not so much.
not  a challenge turq, educate me.  could you think of examples?

Let me clarify what I was suggesting.  I was implying that what Russia is doing is just reacting like we might have had Russia somehow arranged a missile shield in Canada.  We'd put more missiles in Turkey (again).

Beyond that, I was also suggesting that we focus more on trade and less on things like a missile shield because of the repercussions we're seeing now.

Let them deploy the bombers, then deploy 2 aircraft carriers, 20 destroyers etc around cuba, problem solved

Anyone who thinks America and Russia are now buddies and that the whole cold war escapade has been forgiven and forgotten is deluded. Russians still don't trust Americans and I'd wager that many Americans still wouldn't trust the Russians as far as they could throw them...ye were ideological enemies for the best part of a century for God's sake. While the modern political climate allows for much more co-operative trading between Russia and the US the ghost of the cold war still lingers and it is no surprise that a rising of the stakes, such as this missile defence shield plan, is met with a little hostility. As Cam and others have pointed out we are entering competitive times regarding global resources and the US, thanks to their foreign policy over the last 8 years, are perceived by many as a nation who are now prepared to openly fight for these resources. I'd bet that Russia are still incredibly wary of 'the old enemy'.

As Cam has also pointed out globalisation does not mean some sort of one world Government where everyone gets an equal cut...sadly the world doesn't work that way. Someone always has to lose. What seems to be happening is that each continent is attempting to form into a super bloc and each of these super blocs will no doubt look out for their own interests in the long run.

What exactly is the point of a missile shield in Europe if its not to negate some of Russia's offensive capability?
The US needs to get beyond the 'white man have fire stick' level of diplomacy.

Jesus Christ, the so called shield would be lucky to knock down a few of the Russian missiles, its not like we have a few thousand ASAT/AICBM (yes I make up my own terms) missiles sitting over their on launchers. Hell, they only thing that might happen is instead of 8 there is only 7 nukes hitting some city. Its effect is negligible if your gonna be putting more then a few missiles in the air, and then, it only effects you if you launch a nuclear war.

Not much of "a shield" neither.

A radar and 10 interceptor missiles? c'mon.

Moscow denied reports that it was considering basing nuclear-armed bombers in Cuba in reply to US plans for a missile defense shield in eastern Europe, but said it would take measures to counter the US system.

The "measures" will likely be designing systems that can evade the current anti-missile technology, not exactly unexpected or unwarranted, Russian technology has been in direct competition with American since 1946, and will continue to be for decades into the future.

The shield wouldn't knock down any Russian missiles heading for the US. It would only knock down missiles (Russian or otherwise) heading for Europe. Russia knows this...they're just flexing their muscle.

Hopefully nothing comes from a sub around the North Atlantic considering the Navy is moving the 5 P-3C squadrons down here to NAS Jacksonville.

Yeah I know over the pole is the shortest route, but I figured they'd also have some flying over Europe so they have another angle of attack.

It's a matter of orbital mechanics and ballistics.

The interceptors can't do anything about a missile during the ICBM's boost phase. The interceptors are post-apogee weapons. They only intercept the re-entry vehicles after they are on their way down.

if someone came outside my house and placed some machine guns facing my home and my neighbours i will feel threatened. I don't blame Russia for feeling so. How else do you expect to respond when war mongers want a "defence" system placed outside them?

It's already made public when Congress announced they'd be closing the base to the public in 2005.
