So, I am thinking about abusing the step up program to land myself a GTX280 for about 150$ CAD.
The power requirements on the website say
"  Minimum of a 550 Watt power supply.(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 40 Amp Amps.)"
I have a 600W ULTRA PSU, which currently does not sell retail any more.
It has 38A on combined 12V rails, which is slightly less.

Other specs include:
eVGA 650i Motherboard
Intel Q6700 @ 2.8GHz
1 SATA Optical Drive (Phillips)
1 SATA Hard Drive (Seagate)
2GB Corsair TwinX 800MHz
No other add ons (Sound card, TV tuner)

I am thinking of doing something like this.
My only predicament is that there might not be enough Amps on the 8pin.

Should I bother with hooking this up, hoping it works, and if not go out to the store to purchase a new PSU?

If you suggest a new PSU, please try and find it on This website
I would like to keep the cost ~$150CAD, but there is no budget, as long as it doesn't go over $500

Thank you in advance.

id recomend the first one but if you really want to squeze your budget get the later you just wont have much room to work with. for ten dollars it really isnt worth not gettting the 650

Why would you do that?

.....

Just run it the correct way. The recommended power usage isn't the absolute necessary power usage.

Although ULTRA isn't really great quality, I doubt you'll have any problems.

Is the GTX 200 series the one after the 9xxx family or do they just sort it that way on their website and it is just something different/special?

GTX 200 series are not closely related to GF8/9.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

you can't connect a 6pin PCI-e plug to your mobo nor a 8 pin +12V "P4" to your GPU. Or am I reading your pic wrong?
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

You read the pic right.

My mobo only has a 4 pin, and my psu has an 8pin connector, which splits into 2 4pins.
So yeah, use a 12v for the mobo, use a 12v+8pin for GFX.
I don't think the 8pin is qualified as 12v, but I'm not positive.

did you not read my post i showed you 2 psu's sub 150 with enough amps and from one of the better psu manufacturers out there
unless you want to spend up to 180 with ability to go sli later then you have to think bigger like that one or this one

sorry for double post but since i cant see the specs on your psu id like to point out that you can convert 2 or more sata connectors to a 6 or 8 pin and the convertors should be in with your new gpu.
edit: dam just looked its 2 4 pins to 6 pin and 2 6pins to 8pin
edit2: either one of these your psu

I am fairly sure the GTX 280 comes with a 2xMolex to 6Pin and a 2x6pin to 8pin.
I was also looking at some from PC Power and Cooling but they're all weird colours

you could hook it up but theres a chance youd be under powering it which isnt good plus its probabaly getting old 2 years or so and you loose watts/ amps as it gets older.

My PSU is was "Born" (unboxed) in March '08, so it isn't that old.
I am aware of the chance of under powering, I think I may go with the upgrade.
I will look in to the Corsair ones, however I am not confident they sell them at the retail store.
If not I might go with ULTRA, or Thermaltake Toughpower if it is in the retail store.

This one actually looks pretty good, and I recall seeing it in the store.
