Ecuador 2008

No pictures, sorry. My backpack was stolen, along with my brand new $250 camera. Ouch.

Things I'm Grateful For:
- electricity that works 99% of the time
- a full closet of clothes
- my family, friends, and dog
- warm water
- toilets that flush properly
- washer/dryer
- dishwasher
- EMS hiking boots
- Nalgene bottles
- a room that doesn't smell like asshole
- music/iPod

In the past 3 days I have:
- contracted a cold
- then a sore throat
- followed by a bad cough
- and a quick high fever
- not to mention altitude sickness
- which made me go to a clinic to get a two hour IV drip (at least I got to watch The Office in English)
- and now I still have a cough that persists even when there is no phlegm (it's like dry heaving, but I'm coughing instead)

That's a nice ending to my fairly impressive haven't-gotten-sick-in-5-years streak. It's unavoidable when you're in a 25x15 room with 11 other sick individuals (although I am proud to say I was last to get sick ).

More to come as I reflect...

I did not, however I did meet plenty of indigenous people that spoke both Spanish and Kichua.

which region did you go to?
i used to live on the coast of ecuador.
now i'm in canada, but i still love my own contry no matter if we dont have all the things that you listed

We went to San Cristobal for a week, and stayed in Chaupiloma (a small village 2 hours north of Quito) for about 2 and a half weeks.

Quito sucks if you're adjusted to a very calm weather, i went there and got sick, allergy to the polluted air
at night is nice and all but in the morning very early is fucking cold and at midday is freaking hot like the humidity is so high up there because of the altitude( which is like 3000 metres above sea).
if there is a next time i suggest you go to a drier area like close to coast, it's Hot but avoidable.
and yes some places in Quito smell so bad, the washrooms are disgusting, never liked it and never will.

Oh no, I really enjoyed it, the only thing I feel awful about is my camera. Thanks though.

I actually liked Quito, but then again we only stayed there for a couple days. Chaupiloma is even higher than Quito.

The strange thing is though, I didn't faint when I was doing the 5 hour hike, or digging holes for a cistern or barbed wire fence. I fainted once while walking and once in the grocery store. Does that sound like altitude sickness? I'm pretty sure they misdiagnosed whatever I had.

A mate of mine went to Ecuador a while ago as part of a kind of group of volunteers. He had his pack and $250 camera stolen too. Must be an underground backpack-and-$250-camera theft ring going on. My mate managed to pay back the criminal underworld by accidentally getting a drug dealer arrested though.
He got sick as well come to think of it... are they custom selling this specific Ecuadorian experience in travel agencies now?

Travel is awesome but you've got to expect that kind of shit to happen. All the best anyway.
