the extra health compensates for survivability because it doesn't have the air blast
pwnt
Yes but you get crits from behind. Thats the tradeoff. Airblast for back crits.
The BB isn't meant to be a head on weapon. It's a speciality weapon. For ambushes. It even says on the description. If you make a successful ambush then you don't need survivability. If it goes horribly wrong then, like the spy, you pay for your lack of ambushing skills.
I honestly don't understand why Valve put it there in the first place. The AB is the head on weapon. The BB is meant to be for skilled players who are capable of getting behind enemies regularly. When it had the +50 everyone just went for the BB because it had more health.

Airblast was only included along with the Pyro update. So basically the BackBurner was a massive upgrade for those who were already used to the pre-pyro update flamethrower..
It also made me worry about the future of the unlocks. Using crits to create and balance new weapons is one thing, but messing with the health of a class? Thats a road I don't want Valve going down.
It also broke the health-speed ratio amongst other things.

I've been on holiday for two weeks fired this game up, it seems to run better. Strange the updates seem pretty fair and work well.
The backburner should never have had the extra-health, it was overkill. What logical sense does it make to introduce a SNEAKY AMBUSH weapon and then give it Rambo-style health levels? Pyro's with backburners had more health than Soldiers, and could simply stroll face-first fearlessly into a large crowd and tank part of the damage whilst lighting people up. Not only is that against the actual concept of a Pyro, but furthermore it completely contradicts the idea of the backburner. A damn good job they removed the health as soon as they did.

Yah, we did that already branscombe.

It was to help Medics in the thick of combat. I was always browsing through my players to see who was injured, and i'd see a flash of red health, so i'd dart out to help whoever it was and it turned out to be a dispenser or something. It wasn't a huge problem but it sometimes lost me a few seconds that i could be using to heal someone so i'm glad they've changed the building icon.
The new icon is to distinguish buildings from people for the Medics.

Ok stop everyone.
Sam, there was a ninja buff in the very same update. The Backburner now has a longer reach than the standard flamethrower.
So that should make up for the loss of health.
(Then again the backburner might have always had a longer flame but I never noticed it)
If anyone wants to test it start a server, get a bot, and set bot-mimic to 1. Stand away from it and fire and you can kill him but he cant hit you.
