Good card? I don't have a good enough PSU for an 8800GT, so would a 8600GT do?

I'm over BF2. I'm looking forward to newer games.
I can get an 8600GT for $130 from Future Shop (I'm in Canada, no newegg) and an 8800GT for like $170, but I only have a 300W PSU.
The 8800GT recommends at least 450W I think and the 8600GT only requires 350W.

8600gt 256mb runs everything max for me (tf2, cod4, bf2)

I don't have enough money for that yet. A car will be my first big purchase, so a 9900 will be a far ways down the road.

I don't have a newegg in Canada, so the prices are way different. And as stated before, my PSU is too weak for that card.
This was the one I was looking at:

The 8600 is a good card and runs all newer games (COD4, TF2) well and with quite good FPS/ Graphics) I would go for it.

Get a 8800gs. Has 384bit memory compared to 256bit on the 8600gt and they go for nearly the same price.

I have this one:

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ … CatId=1826

I love it but make sure you sign up for the warranty because nVidia decided to use shitty solder and other materials in everything in the 8 series except the 8800s.  Which means the card will die very soon, possibly after a year or so from what I've heard.

The DDR3 version(which this one is) is supposed to be better than an 8800GS from what some of the reviews are saying.

256bit, heh

It doesn't even have that much, it's only 128 for 8600s.

When there's newegg in canada.  I'd get a 3850.  It looks fine and from the reviews it's better than the 8600.

It's $100 and you can save a bit more to get a better PSU.

It seems like a better alternative.

i have a 8600 gt 512 mb card and it runs great.  bf2,cod4 all   on high settings. beats the hell out of my old geforce 6800 256 mb card.

Tbh, BF2 still lags a little bit on all high settings with 4x AA @ 1152x864 on a 48-player Supply Lines game on Wake in 2142 but I think it's my Pentium 4 bottleneckin me.

you failed to mention you have a 7900 NOW and tbh I don't think the 8600 is good enough to warrant upgrade

It isn't.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I did. But I don't know when it's coming.
You other guys have to learn how to read, srsly. I can not, I repeat, CAN NOT get an 8800 series card because my PSU is not powerful enough.

I'm not sinking another $150 into a new PSU either, I'm not a rich fuck that can afford everything.
I know I can get an 8800 for the same price, but then I'd need a new PSU.

Sorry for being such a fag right now, but I hate it when everyone says 'get the 8800' when I stated numerous times that I can't.

Well, for only $130, it's not that bad. I can see my 7900 struggling with some new games, and I want to be prepared.

Besides DX10 support, they're faster.

So I wouldn't be able to run the newer games any better?

Negative, and it's a waste of your money
