Under the new rules, announced Wednesday by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, telemarketers will not be allowed to call anyone who registers either by phone with Bell Canada Inc., which is administering the list on behalf of the CRTC, or online.

Telemarketers will have a grace period of 31 days to contact people who have registered, but after that will be eligible for fines of $1,500 in the case of an individual or $15,000 for corporations should a registrant complain.
More details

It's about freeking time. Stupid credit card and gas companies won't be allowed to call and ask us to switch to their company

we have had that here for awhile.

there are ways for them to get around it, at least here, so it might take awhile to actually have any effect.

Yeah bout time. Too bad it's not like that here, though. If we do get a telemarketer, we just have to tell them never to call us again; instead of having telemarketing being banned completely.

I almost miss hearing the phone ring at dinner time!

Yeah, that's why I put illegal in parenthesis. It's only illegal if they solicit someone who's signed up to not receive phone calls.

I'm sorry to break it to you, but " and " aren't parentheses. ( and ) are.

And the following are exempt: Charities, politics, polls, and those who have established relationships with clients

The first 3 consist of about 30% of the fucking calls as is, so doesnt really solve much mind you.  But, here is the thing that really fucking irks me, is how the last one would make it 100%, seeing how every company is going to use it as a loophole and our legal system is too fucking inept to catch them.

Exactly. And if your not getting a call from a charity a government recording or stupid poll there isn't much other telemarketing crap that is blocked.

One of the latest dirty tricks is for them to call your home phone but not give you time enough to answer it. So you see a missed call on your machine, call them back and are given a recorded message of theirs that you pay the call cost for.

I rather miss telemarketers - they always helped amuse me. I used to fuck with them endlessly.

They wouldn't get me with that one.  If I don't know the number I would not call back.  I don't return calls from people I don't know unless you leave me a message.

I had one guy call me about a new credit card so I kept mashing the buttons on the phone. The guy said "I'm sorry Sir, I don't understand Morse Code" At least the guy had a sense of humour (<- yes I put a "u" in there damnit I'm Canadian).

I used to fuck with them too but then I realised the person actually ringing gets paid either way and it's a bit of entertainment for them in their otherwise boring job.

Yes My step dad was flipping shit on a tele marketer yesterday, telling him to get a real job and how he would like it if we called him when he was eating supper.

Finally. This should have been implemented years ago. I've had two solicitors calling my house at least 4 times a day for the past 3 days.
I just pick up and hang up.
