Most people can't stand the sight of blood from a butchered animal, much less the sight of a splayed carcass.

And a seemingly calm and collected man, slaughtering this person as though it were some mundane act. Your mind is processing all of this, realtime. What is this person, monster, capable of? He's in the middle of slaughtering another human being, seemingly unprovoked. what would he do to me if I interupt him, provoke him?

It is noones place to judge others for their action or inaction, if they have not been in the same situation - the situation being a little different from a simple beat up/rape/robbery.
If you have trained to fight hand to hand or think you can accomplish something regardless and rush in to help - honorable mentions go to you.
If you have no idea of what you are doing or are (to) frightened (to see the thing through with the necessary resolve which is really needed in any act of self defense) and safe yourself - I will not blame you.
It all depends on the situation AND the personal abilities - physical and mentally.

I think they showed bravery by returning to see if he was saveable, and then by using weapons to keep the man contained on the bus until the police came.
