do you need a gpu to get the initial boot? won't it just cope bios with onboard?
my psu is a rather expensive paperweight.
is there anyway to test (other than what i've just done) it's totally fubar before i RMA it?

using a voltmeter you could test it... or try hooking it to another comp that works...
Love is the answer
I would just RMA it, I've had no experience with testing and you'd need to obtain (either buy or borrow) tester like Catbox said.
What PSU is it?
What PSU is it?

I would assume he checked all connections - the PSU fans do not even turn on.mikeyb118 wrote:

tried that, used the two psus with the same starter pin config, old one worked, new one didnt.mikeyb118 wrote:

new one wont do anything in my old rig either, so psu is dead.
the very first time i try to build a rig, the most integral part is DOA.
lovely.

so now imma RMA it - the application is totally online.
if i ring up general enquiries, and say like "need it for uni, cruicial, came to your site under the highest recommendation, paid for next day delivery, bought a substantial amount in one order, first time user of your site blah blah blah" would they actually do anything different?

That being said, what you said might speed up the process, and it doesn't hurt to try. The least you'll get is a free T-shirt or something similar.

well.
ebuyer were rather good actually, i told them my circumstances, and instead of making me pay for special delivery to them, they'll send a van out on monday to pick it up, and the new unit should be with me by thursday.
and they refunded what i payed for the initial delivery too!

Ebuyer are normally very good with their EMA service. I just did it entirely online and it was easy as pie, this was for a graphics card.FatherTed wrote:

Don't be disappointed. My first video card got bad memory within a week of me purchasing. I went through three weeks of trying to get a video card. It wasn't much fun. I was a major newb when I bought my first computer - so much I didn't know that I should have.
are you sure the switch at the back of the PSU is on?????
both 4 pin(if you don't have this then remove 2 pins from a 6 pin to make 4) and 24 pin power supplies are connected to the mobo
the power on switch must be connected at the correct place. make sure this is so

edit: nvm didn't even read the post, old one worked new didn't. Shame that. WAIT WAIT. Check that the PSU is using the right voltage/frequency and shit. There must be something there that lets you choose between yank voltage and our 230v or something around that number
This is what I'm talking about

Make sure your PSU is on the right settingAll European and most African and Asian countries use a supply that is within 10% of 230 V, whereas Japan, North America and some parts of South America use a voltage between 100 and 127 V.
