The herd population in the 1980s was about one million but there are now fewer than 470,000.
The elephant death rate from poachers is now eight per cent — higher than the 7.4 per cent that led to the international ivory trade ban in 1989.
Samuel Wasser, of the University of Washington, said the public needed to press for increased anti-poaching measures to stop herds becoming extinct.
He warned: “If the trend continues, there won’t be any elephants except in fenced areas. We must stop poachers.”
