Now, first off - please, no fanboyism. I like to look at things objectively and I did so when it came to cell phones. The iPhone 3G is an excellent device. I'm 98% happy with it. I'm going to go through a lot of the new - and old - features of the phone, and hopefully I can convince some of you who joined the "anti apple bandwagon" a long time ago and have yet to jump off, as well as people considering the iPhone or any other phone. I was able to fully use my iPhone to it's complete capabilities, as I used it every day on my 11 day vacation to FL.

So, let's begin:

What I've got is the 16 gb white iPhone 3G.

The Phone itself

The phone looks incredible. It's got a nice back which barely smudges, and the front screen is very smooth. The camera is nicely placed so you fingers don't get in the way. It's got a very sleek style to it and fits well in my pocket and I'm able to get it out quickly if someone's calling. There are four buttons and a headphone jack on it - the headphone jack's on the top which I've wanted for a while. The four buttons are a vibrate function which is nice for the movies, a volume button which is convenient if you're listening to music and your phone is locked, and a lock/turn off button which allows you to turn the screen off while keeping your music going. A very useful feature.

The headphones are also great. GREAT sound quality with a nice bass quality as well. There's also a button/microphone on the headphones which allows you to pause your music, or if somebody is calling, you click the button, it fades out your music and you go to the call...click it again when your call is up, and your music fades back in. Awesome feature.

Connectivity

AT&T is simply...fucking great. I came from Verizon which had ok to good signal strength, but with AT&T's 3G network...I had 5 bars almost all the time when I wasn't in my room (when I was away). Even with 1 bar of signal strength, web pages were able to load incredibly fast. Simply put, AT&T's 3G network is by far worth the bill. Wi-Fi connectivity as well was great.

The Software

The interface is very, very easy to navigate in. Safari is quite awesome and works very fast, the iPod part is incredible as expected, and the phone part is very simple and very easy to navigate through contacts, as well as add contacts in. Generally, the software is great.

Apps - there are a lot of great apps on the phone. Facebook Mobile, Tap Tap Revenge, AIM Mobile, Texas Hold 'Em and Crash Bandicoot Racing (both of which I paid for and are well worth the money), Mobile News and Shazam are GREAT programs, and very useful.

My only cons when it comes to the phone is that the keyboard can take a little bit to get used to, and the spell correct can be annoying as fuck...especially when you're trying to curse! I can't count how many times I said "ducking hell" or something to the sort.

The other con is AIM can cause some crashes. But that's not Apple's fault.

I give the iPhone a 9.9/10. The only reason it's not a 10 is because of the keyboard being a bit difficult to use. Basically though, go get this phone.

If anybody has any questions, feel free to ask.

Yes. But they (AT&T in the US) still force you to buy an unlimited data plan.

Hilarious. :S

Yes. And it has quite a good range, though. If you only need Wi-Fi connectivity though, get an iPod Touch.

I still don't quite see a reason to get this over any other smartphone.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

The interface is more immaculate and responsive than any smartphone. Software wise you are in a weird place because Apple want to coral everyone into the buy everything camp .. plus the fact that you need fagtunes installed

It is  a very nice piece of hardware.

Hardly a waste of money for what's essentially a mini-computer. It's not wasting money when you have a job and are willing to pay for it.

God, so much for no blind fanboyism...

I like fagtunes. XD

Nah, I think iTunes is actually pretty great. It's convenient, simple and easier to use than winamp imo. Plus, I buy movies off of there. I watched Charlie Wilson's War on the way down to Florida, and I watched Taxi Driver on the way back up today.

It's awesome because you can easily show off holiday photos to friends and family. Plus i can play films without needing to stick them onto dvd's.

In all fairness I do think the iphone is probably a fun piece of hardware to have. Which sounds restricted from apple according to a few posts before. The average user won't know how to crack their device to get the most use out of it. They made a stupid choice not having java though.

Why would I pay $300 for a phone when I can get one for $30 that still has the same capacity to talk to people?

I mean I want a phone not a buttsecks machine.

its a status symbol i guess.  i have my plain old flip phone and i get a new one every two years almost for free.  i got better things to spend money on.

50 for the phone, 250 in investments.

my dad just bought two of these, one for himself, and one for his co-worker, (He owns a small buisness and buys employees phones and fits the bill)

I have the first one and love it, I would like a 3G connection and a regular headphone jack and the GPS feature (I have a terrible sense of direction) but he doesnt want to lay down another 200$ for a new one

I was checking them out at the AT&T store though, tbh, the thing feels, cheap... I like how mine feels solid, and has a metal back but the 3G iPhone's back is plastic, and the thing feels light... Bottom line, feels like it breaks EASY, or it cracks...

My question for you - Have you dropped it yet? Had any damage to it? How is the actual body of the phone?
