I don't know if anyone remembers, but a few months back I made a topic about how me and a friend were planning on driving to South Africa. Well, we're starting to plan it a little better now, but one thing we've realised is that we're going to need insurance that covers us in both Europe and Africa.

Does anyone know where you find out about this? Google isn't helping at all. I'd call up some insurance companies, but we don't even have a car right now, so I'm leaving it for the moment. Halp.

hmm. i was under the impression that your insurance would cover you regardless of where you are, so long as you're driving your car and aren't there for permanent residency. definitely call your provider about it. you might already be good to go.

I'm pretty sure it'll only cover me for EU countries. As above though, I need to call them to find out for sure. I was just hoping it'd be easy, like 'click here to add global coverage to your policy' type thing.

There's no such thing as worldwide car insurance. Each country has their own legal requirements about insurance.

In some countries, you insure the car. In other countries its the driver whose insured. Your best bet is to speak to your normal insurer and ask what countries they can cover you for. In some countries (Vietnam, Laos for example), you don't even need a license, just bribe the cops $5 if you get caught.

Your current insurance should cover you anywhere, provided you're in your normal car or you have extended cover to drive another car.

Sorry dood, but no.

Most British insurers will give you a free green card to travel in Europe for up to 30 days, but only if you request it. Some will automatically include it, but its not so common.

Remember, its determined by each countries' laws, which vary a lot. The British government (for example) doesn't give a shit if you crash into an African.
