well i don't necesarily believe that it's because of better training equipment, until the 70's olympic competitors did not get any back up from the state to finance training and similar but they still won at a lot of events. what makes the atleats i belive is an interest in sports and time to do it from a young age paired with parents that encourage it. and then decent facilities through their childhood to practice in + a higher density population has been the reason the US has always been doing very decent at most olympics. it's not because of state of the art tech (it wasn't until a few olympics ago anyway) but because of a state of mind of competiveness that doesn't exist in the same way in europe (yes i have lived both places so i know what i'm talking about, but exceptions can happen) and a higher population density. that's the true reason for the medals (+ all the african americans with their more evolved legs and lungs)
also I dont think the more people part count since for example India they are not a poor country they have 1.2 billion and since the emergence of Olympics India has won only 8 gold medals and all of them were in field hockey.jord wrote:

America has more money than every other country entering the Olympics and spend more on technologies and training machines. There's a Boxer from Africa that they've entered and he had to train on car tyre's because they couldn't afford a punchbag for him. That's not some upcoming athlete they turned down money for, that's their guy they're entering for the Olympics.
As much as Rocky 4 shows training with cheap stuff and natural materials toughens you up, it doesn't when it comes to this high level.

Australia does well in relation to it's population size because we have better research and development programs. There's a lot of money that goes into training the athletes that other countries simply doesn't have.
The US does well because of this, and also because of population size.

More people to choose from = better class of athletes.
Take Britain for example, we are also developed and wealthy. But the US has 5x the population of Britain (maths???), hence they win more medals. We also like football and booze too much.
