Steroids aren't used anymore. Too easy to detect. The most recent drug used to induce a better performance is EPO. It's a protein created by the kidneys to induce the production of red blood cells. So adding EPO to your system makes you create more red blood cells, therefore increasing your oxygen capacity. Although according to pharmeceutical companies, the production of EPO is closely monitored and "tagged" with a blue/red tint so it can be properly detected on drug tests.
