Basicly you have 3 choices after that time to recieve a signal, have an HDTV with service to a cable provider, have your normal tv with a cable provider, have your normal tv with a decoder box without a cable provider.
Sucks my provider only shows in i from what i know, cause my SD DVD player upconverts SD to P and even then it looks better.
all my cable box shows is 1080i when the channel is selected.  no 1080p option as far as I can tell.

I don't think it's possible to broadcast in 1080p to the general public yet. Maybe sometime soon. The only things I know that can play in 1080 are Blu-Rays and DVD Upscalers.

S'what i assumed, seeing how a 1080i TV showing 1080P looks worse than SD IMO.

am I wrong in assuming most new tv's are not 1080p ready anyway?

Most are...it depends on your selection. I got my TV specifically so it could play in 1080p.

no, but tis best to future proof, especially when it ended up costing less.  How many 46" fully 1080P LCD's can you find for 2 grand?

You did. That's an excellent choice of TV. Buy a Blu-Ray player or a DVD Upscaler and you'll see how crazy 1080p is.

Standalone bluray>PS3, but id be hard pressed to find a non-videophile to notice the difference, MO.

Standalone Blu-Ray is much, much better. Sound wise, and picture wise a little bit as well. Probably better for a large TV like usm has too.

You can watch the Jackets lose in HD - I can watch the Islanders lose in HD.

1. 1080p defined
1080p resolution--which equates to 1,920x1,080 pixels--is the latest HD Holy Grail. That's because 1080p monitors are theoretically capable of displaying every pixel of the highest-resolution HD broadcasts. On paper, they should offer more than twice the resolution of today's 1,280x720, or 720p, HDTVs, such as Samsung's HL-P5085W. Some companies, such as LG, refer to these super-high-res of sets as ultra-HD, while others prefer to substitute true or full for ultra

Obviously, the quality of the source material you're viewing is very important, but so are screen size and how far you're sitting from your TV. Indeed, our resident video guru, Senior Editor David Katzmaier, reports that the extra sharpness afforded by the 1080p televisions he's seen is noticeable only when watching 1080i sources on a larger screen. Comparing a 50-inch 1080p DLP set to a 50-inch 720p DLP set, for example, he says you'll be hard-pressed to notice more detail with 1080i sources, especially from farther than 8 feet away. Even if you can see the difference, it will be much less obvious than, say, the difference between DVD and 720p HDTV. Of course, performance will vary from set to set, and we'll know more when we have a chance to thoroughly test more 1080p televisions.

I had to buy a dvr expander because I have to record everything in HD now (which takes up a lot more space). SD just doesn't do it.

@[TUF]Catbox, that is exactly right. The picture quality (1080i/1080p) is not very noticeable unless it's a larger television. You'd be better paying more attention to a televisions other features. Contrast levels in particular.

It will be a long time before any television provider gives us a 1080p signal. The bandwidth required is enormous. For now we are limited to BD players etc if we want it. BD's (noticeable) benefits over broadcast HD is really just sound though. Uncompressed audio isn't likely to be broadcast anytime soon neither.

Also, I think the op is confusing digital television with High Def TV. It's not the same. Digital Television can still be Standard definition. Common mistake tbh.
