watched the docu "earth" in 1080p, looks but then after that I had to watch t.v which is split 5 times too (normal cable) looks crap...

No, DVD offers numerous advantages other previous formats, not just the quality, however the quality was still a massive jump. HD does not offer and advantages over standard other than improved quality.
