If I get my projector sold, I might get a new graphics card, too. I'm pretty much thinking of either the 4850 or 9800GTX+. If I would only do gaming, it would be a no-go for anything but the 4850, but since I do a lot of folding, the better GPGPU properties of the 9800GTX+ are tempting.

What do you say? Also note that this is just speculation, and I'm not looking at specific cards. The resolutions I'll be using are 1920x1200 and 1920x1080.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Why is folding so popular?  Sure you help research but your energy bill goes through the roof and your room heats up like a mofo.

Yeah, it is bad for the environment too, unless your power comes from a renewable, clean resource, like wind or solar.

well, i would probably do it i were the one paying the electricity bills.  i want to help, but it means that my computer is sucking energy all of the time AND that i have to turn the AC on...

Truth, do it in the winter with your window open, that will save some power/uncomfortableness

i was thinking about using it as a space heater to warm up the room but i think it'll still consume way too much energy when compared to the central air system

Probably, you can always bring your propane grill inside to keep warm...

The difference of power usage between idle and load isn't all that big. The added environmental cost (which in case you're using non-fossil power sources like nuclear or water is null) is peanuts in comparison to the benefit of curing diseases.

EDIT: haffey, you live in CT, open a window if your room is hot

It's usually 85+ outside

okay i have a watt-meter thing lyring around somewhere.  if i can find it i'll test the computer at idle and at load...and perhaps i'll join the bf2s F@H team

Competition tbh. You compete in how much you can utilize your hardware

I think of it more like that, than just cancer research. Also feels good having your computer doing something good when not used.

Also, any standard gaming computer uses so little power that it's barely notable. My system uses around 250- 300w under full load. A large-screen TV uses twice that.

Exactly, it's not like you'll be playing a game that the 4850 can handle but the 9800 can't.

If it wasn't for the retarded PCB design and price, that would be a really good option.

It is not the difference between idle and load we are talking about, it is leaving your computer on all day so it can fold. That makes a huge difference. When you aren't using it, instead of letting it run a program all day, shut it off.

Hmm I would say 4850+AMH but as it's a higher res a 4870 might be a better option tbh.

A good PC uses maybe 200W when folding. Assuming a electricity price of 10c/kWh you have to pay 48c for a day of folding vs. leaving your PC off. If you use your PC during the day and continue folding during the night the added cost is something like 20c/day. If you can afford a PC you can afford that too.
