A number of very good and very bad posts. The majority of my playing time is spend as a Sniper and Engineer and I can say that it doesn't matter where you put mines or claymores, some asshat WILL find a way to run into it and will punish you 90% of the time. Seriously. If it were possible to put a claymore in a wooden box in the game, some STFI will find a way to blow himself into paste.
I will agree that some snipers put clays in bad spots, but not usually. For AT mines, there is simply no damn excuse. It has gotten to the point where I don't even bother putting them down anymore because I got tired of being punished by the STFIs that take no responsibility for their actions and press the punish button before their body can hit the ground. The key difference between clays and ATMs is that a clay will auto-detonate at ranges that have even surprised me into the afterlife. I can absolutely understand when a teammate comes around a corner an gets blasted by one. However, an ATM will sit there until somebody runs over it. Unfortunately, I would say that at leat 40% of the time, a friendly will run over it, which in my opinion is too much of a risk to bother placing them down..
To people who say that AT Mines don't make a difference in a game, that is BS. The reason why they don't is because Engineers are scared to use them due to STFIs like you who only care about n00b-tubin' the next enemy n00b-tuber. No matter where the mine is at, I get the punish. Even if the blind bastard decides to forgive me, I still lose 2 points for the team kill. I have placed them in the freakin' open in the middle of the damn road and STFIs will STILL run over them like moths to a flame.
As a sniper, I have stopped putting clays to my rear because some STFI will always want to snuggle up to me in my nice hidden sniper position with his PKM and start blasting that portable auto-cannon. That thing is so loud, people on other servers can hear it firing. Just as dumb as they are to come by my position, they will ignore the red skull and crossbones and hence get blasted. No Brokeback Mountain for you, pal. My rejection of their affection will always earn me the punish. The only time I use clays is in the rare situation where I am alone trying to take a flag. Snipers are very weak up close and to be honest, trying to take a flag with nothing but a pistol makes us feel very exposed. Hence, I will place a clay in the directions were I think an enemy will come to defend the flag. When the flag is up, I throw a grenade to detonate them before some claymore sniffin' STFI comes along and trips over one. I might also drop one as a nice treat while I am deep in enemy territory. Other than that...clays are useless.
In my opinion, the whole punish system needs to be completely REMOVED because people are too stupid to use it correctly. Instead, list the actual teamkill stats during the game and lower the votes needed to ban STFIs that are a liabilty to the team.
