Static IP: Is it worth it

Well my ISP has offered to switch me to a static IP from a dynamic one for free. Much as I like the sound of that I don't really see the point of it without a good reason.

So tell me, what are the advantages of having a static IP (apart from the obvious hosting servers and such). Conversely, what are the bad points to it? I really want to know if its worth me switching or if I should just leave my Internet how it is.

Hmm I thought thats a router setting. Static ip means your ip stays the same forever until you change it and dynamic ip means it changes for example once per day. Its considered safer but I still prefer static ip. And I have no AV.

Static is a pain if you want to evade IP bans. I have experience :S

Im using static ip's to forward some ports

I think I remember reading on Portforward.com not to do that... (let your ISP do it)

The only reason I personally would see a need for static IP is like you said web hosting or if you like to access your pc remotely when a way from home. Now I would take the static if it were me as I remote to my server sometimes and don't have to worry about IP bans.

I don't really see any advantage to static IPs. Bypassing bans gets much harder, and if you run a server you can always use dyndns.

If you don't host anything or rdp into your systems there is not much point. Even with one that changes DDNS can somewhat close the gap.

Static IP -> You get banned -> Your banned forever

If your interested in hosting stuff, use a dynamic dns service as max said- and that works fine.

I see some confusion about Static IPs ("Port Forwarding") - On a home network there are two different "types" of Static IP if you like. The first is that the IP address your ISP gives to your router (http://www.whatismyipaddress.com); Almost every ISP will give you a dynamic one of these (to attempt to conserve IP addresses), However you can get a static on if you need to.
The other static ip option- and this is the one most of us will be most familiar with, will be assigning the computers in your network fixed ips (either through Address Reservation, or Static IPs), which allows you to setup port forwarding, or just so you know which IP belongs to which computer. Your ISP doesnt give a shit about what you do here, and they will never know if you have, or havent got it set up.

Another solution is to not be a twat and don't get IP banned. But maybe that's just me.

DDNS works fine, otherwise there's really no problem with dynamic IPs. I've had the same IP for years, through two different houses I think. However, it's only a Comcast home connection. Not complaining about the speeds though.

I wish my router wasn't fucked up, and would give me the dynamic IPs we're supposed to have. Static IPs are a total pain if you ask me.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

For everyone else, thanks, but it's as I thought. There's really no advantage to having a static IP and I don't really have any plans to host anything soon.

I'll stick with Dynamic IP for now I think.

good choice. i thought you were talking about router settings as well, in which case a static IP would be an advantage. (on your LAN)
