Yeah, it really is.

More than 140 dead

More than 140 people are feared dead after a passenger plane swerved off the runway at Madrid's Barajas airport.

A spokesman for the Spanish emergency services, Herbigio Corral, said only 28 people survived the crash.

The Spanair flight had just taken off for the Canary Islands at about 1420 local time with 172 people on board. It is thought the left engine caught fire.
I hope they find out the cause. That is disturbing.

According to some rumours, the pilot thought he heard some bad noises from the engine, told the passengers he was going to turn around, but then decided to take off anyway. I really hope they aren't true.

yeah heard about that too, that he aborted the first take off then went anyway.

R.I.P. to the killed people tho

always seen those Spanair planes at the Canaries while I was there.

Wow, that is indeed tragic.

Are there any reports of how the plan crashed? ie - was it heading up or down when it crashed?

Was probably at the point that he couldn't shut down and turn safely. No good options there. Just be thankful ANYONE survived.

i heard it veered off the runway....
but i also read that there was an INTERNAL explosion in the rear of the plane, which works with the left engine going out.

once there is an internal explosion like that, it doesnt matter if they are in the air or on the ground...if it gets to those wings, game over.....

its a sad thing...i hope pilot error wasnt involved.

Plane was taking off, engine blew whilst if was off the ground, it swung to the right and crashed.

ugh, poor wording.

was it on its way up (attempting to take off), or had it come up in the air, and then fallen down again.

It is confirmed. The plane left terminal at 1.05pm, and ATTEMPTED take-off. It returned to the terminal with technical difficulties. An hour later it attempted to take off again, and this is what happened.

Uh oh. I think it was human error this time. Big error.

Sounded like a nasty accident indeed. Reports of survivors though, looks like they're quite lucky to be alive. Doesn't seem like Pilot error, Engines don't really blow up because of the Pilot. Must've been a Mechanical or Electrical failure

Seriously I heard stories about the maintenance there.  I work in tourism.  I changed a whole vacation once just not to fly with Spanair.

how do you end up crashing because of an engine fire?

sounds fishy to me.   seems like the pilot fucked up and aborted too late tbh.

Correct me here.

If an engine catches fire and stops working properly, and the other is going at a high throttle, as it would be just after takeoff/climbing then wouldn't that make it the plane unbalanced. Pilot loses control, plane crashes

idunno

Engine failure is a bigger deal when climbing/takeoff than it is elsewhere right, same reason the Concorde crashed after one of its engines blew up right after takeoff

No wait I'm wrong, they turned the engine off in the concorde on purpose, so....yeah, I dunno.

no, planes are designed and pilots are trained to handle that situation.

The DC-9, in this case MD-82 hasn't a great capability to flight with one engine, and it's and old plane.  I love the plane, I used to flight a lot in DC-9's when I was a kid.  And don't forget Spanair has a bad maintenance record.  Old planes + poor maintenance = dangerous flights.

trust me, its a very recoverable situation.  something else went wrong.
