WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.

The reversal follows a month of attacks by McCain, who has questioned Obama's experience, criticized his opposition to most new offshore oil drilling and mocked his overseas trip.

The poll was taken Thursday through Saturday as Obama wrapped up a weeklong vacation in Hawaii that ceded the political spotlight to McCain, who seized on Russia's invasion of Georgia to emphasize his foreign policy views.

"There is no doubt the campaign to discredit Obama is paying off for McCain right now," pollster John Zogby said. "This is a significant ebb for Obama."

McCain now has a 9-point edge, 49 percent to 40 percent

I read that this morning and was suprised to read that a monthly poll would have different results from the 3 day gallup... since theres been so much going on in the past 3 days with the abortion and everything

Edit: Wait so is it 46-41 or 49-40?

I really don't buy into the polls.  No one ever asks me.  Hopefully it's true (the poll).  OB is an empty suit & I've know for quite some time that this emperor has no clothes.

It's one poll and won't last long. When Obama picks his VP either Thursday or Friday and the DNC goes on, he'll rocket back up.

Get ready to see him go down faster than Paris Hilton on vacation.

They are simply returning fire.  If they didnt McCain would be ahead 70-30.

Whats funny is that you guys have bought into the GOPs only argument.  The "fact" that Obama is too good to be true.  He's so popular, he must be just a bunch of fluff.  Oh wait, now he's losing in the polls.... why are you voting for McCain again?  lmao

I just don't understand, McCain know nothing about the economy.

And has even admitted so in the past. CNN said it best - he's just not playing the field up to his potential. Hopefully when he picks his VP tomorrow or friday, things will go right back to normal.

I'd be very careful about McCain, specifically in who he picks for the Vice president.  I would be suprised if the guy makes it to the mid terms without the oval office being turned into a makeshift hospital ward.

why?

25% of my last paycheck was taken to pay for programs I do not support and will never benefit from

my county has the highest sales tax in the nation, and yet our budget deficit still grows

our federal and state governments are the among the most inefficient organizations on the planet

that is why

Time out.  The GOP's argument isn't that Obama is too good to be true.  If you really believe that then I don't find it hard to believe that you by into Obama's bullshit.

Fact is that Obama isn't too good to be true.  He's terrible.  He has no voting record to really speak of.  He is not tough on crime.  He flip flops more than John Kerry and is just about as arrogant.  He's a poll politician like Bill "Stick it wherever" Clinton.  He has absolutely no loyalty to anyone (save himself).  He's going to tax the shit out of US.  He can't even stand up to the Clintons, what makes you think he'd do better against the likes of Putin and Dinna jacket?  No foreign policy experience.  No military experience.  It's mind boggling he's even made it this far.

Why does anyone pay attention to polls of the popular vote? Obama is winning the electoral map 228-163.

Did I say I was voting for McCain? Obama is a fucking blow hard that likes seeing himself on TV, he flip-flops on issues to suit his crowd.

McCain I don't know, haven't seen too much of him.

I am voting independent.

Get over the whole GOP is doing everything bad for this country. Democrats are just to blame also. American politics have turned into smear-fests.

If the Dems knew how to run the country so well why is their approval rating for congress lower than the approval rating for the president that everyone seems to hate so much?

At least we know what we are getting with Bush(a moron) but Congress the funny thing is is that they were duped by a moron.
