Probably the fan? My friend bought a 4870 recently and he told me that it runs hot, so I asked him for temps - it's in the high 80's. Seems like a lot of users were reporting that the fan wasn't kicking in, so the fix on the interweb basically made the fan run at a user-set percentage. He ran it at 40 or 50 % and temps dropped to the 40's.

That's because by default the fan is only at 27%. There's a very easy CCC tweak to make it run at 100%. My 4850 never goes over 65*C or so.

Lol at them. My 3870 stock cooler would give me 93-97 degrees on 100%
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

If you don't want to go ati for high-range, the only other choice is EVGA core 216 GTX260.

No, it isn't "the only other choice" - there are plenty of choices - you may not choose them, but they are available - and the whole point of all this choice is that not everybody want the same thing or for the same reasons.

If you can get X for $100, or the same X for $80, which one would you get?

Or in this case a GTX260 that is worse than HD4870 for x amount of money, or one that beats the HD4870 for the same x amount of money.

In my books it's the only viable choice.

This?

Apparently, it's supposed to be competition for the 4870. According to the article, at this point, since both perform pretty much similarly, get whatever's cheaper, which is still the 4870.

Radeon HD4890 overclocks to 1GHz+

First 1GHz+ card ever

AMD’s RV790 will probably be remembered as the first GPU that will easily overclock to over 1GHz core clock.

Some partners will ship overclocked cards but 900+ MHz should be the fastest clock out of the box which with some little help of the overdrive tool, you might get the chance to go over the magical 1000MHz barrier.

With water-cooling, we might be getting over 1000MHz easier, but we are not sure if the high clock should be enough to beat GTX 275. Nvidia’s partners will of course overclock their GTX 275 cards and again give AMD a run for its money.

Nvidia’s 1000MHz+ clock will have to wait for 40nm we reckon.

Why did you decide to bump an old topic that was never ever updated by suddenly posting this and........forget it

A 1Ghz capable card eh? Is this still on the 55nm process? So what's new exactly on the 4890 as opposed to the 4870, what's the details

Isn't it better to have one thread instead of 10? Yes its still 55nm. As opposed to 4870 4890 is the first card that can OC to 1Ghz. Did I answer all your questions?

- Why did it take you 6 months to realise that one thread would be better than 10 (even after you made the thread originally)

- I'm asking why is it this card can overclock to 1Ghz so 'easily" but you seem to not be capable to give a proper answer, on any of the technical specifications of this new card for that matter (not that I was asking you specifically anyway), all you did was give some sort of stupid answer as if I'm some sort of 5 year old retard

tl;dr, basically, shut the fuck up with that shit

I just wanted to know how ATi have managed to seemingly not change much to the architecture yet still pull off 1Ghz core clocks

Update your OP with the new info as well, because it's lost in the middle of the page.

Why do you ask stupid questions. Cos after six months theres news about this card and I thought it was worth posting about it.
I like to keep it organized and have every news AMD related in one thread

Card has a good, high stock frequency so its not that hard to OC it for another 150Mhz.
