If you can have something for free for no catch then why not? Like I said before, fuck internet morales.

If I offered you £10 000 000 would you not accept it because you feel you haven't earned it?
It's not like EA or some other company has offered you the game...
What? I don't care...?

I have stolen much from MicroSoft and I am proud of it.

They have a Monopoly, this was proven in court.  The judge said outright that any penalty levied against MS would just hurt  the stock holders and let them off with a slap on the wrist.

Fuck MS, I was bent over to the tune of $350 to buy Windows98. Try patching that with dial up, never fucking worked and always crashed.  Then the fucks start selling Windows 98se.  Those bastards.

Yeah, MS made a life enemy out of me.  I was poor, built my first system, and was bent over by Bill Gates.

Yeah, and back in 1996 I could have just went to my local store and bought lots of Uber Unix programs to run on my gaming system. /sarcasm

They have/had a Monopoly, they buy and sell software developers, they use illegal bussiness practices to keep a monopoly so software can't be developed for Linux.  Why else do you think they allow people to pirate their software at will?  So free software like Linux will never catch on due to lack of software for it.

I think the point here is that the current business model of video games is failing.  Purchasing a CD, or DVD, that can be easily copied is going to lead to piracy.

The original arcade video games had slots for quarters.  You had to pay a quarter if you wanted to play.  This is what World of Warcraft has created today with subscriptions.  (Not that I like WOW; I prefer FPS's.)

Because your stats are controlled on a server that is owned by Blizzard, you have to pay them, if you want your playing time to count.

Imagine if EA got paid a quarter every time someone logged onto a ranked BF2 server.  They wouldn't care if someone pirated the BF2 disc.  In fact, they would probably mail out BF2 discs like those dang AOL disc in the 1990's!

This model doesn't work as well with movies and music because there are no such thing as STATs in movies or music.  Not sure what I would do for those.

I do it because I don't want to pay for it or don't have the money to pay for it (ie - I wouldn't have bought it if piracy wasn't possible). But that isn't a valid reason, it's still stealing.

What the publishers are complaining about is the unrealised profit that they claim is owed to piracy. The vast majority of this is profit that could not be realised even if piracy was non-existent, because of the current prices. If they want to tap the market of people who cannot afford to buy their games at $50-70 a pop, they do need to lower their prices.

I agree that people will always steal, but I'm sure we can also agree that a considerable portion of the people who pirate games are people who simply cannot afford to maintain the collections that they have at the current prices. This was definitely the case for me going through college. There was no way that I could afford spending $70 on a game, but if it was closer to $40, it'd be a lot more plausible.

Yep.

I can understand downloading music illegally because CD's and iTunes are a fucking ripoff. Even Apple realizes that.

However, games...not really.

But what about PS3 game prices? Is Bluray really that much more expensive or are just publishers getting greedier?

Considering Blu-Rays can store up to 50 gigs of data and are 1080p capable, I think console games are very, very worth the price they're at.

And this is when I barely have enough money to spend on games as it is, and I'm able to get by. If you knew my situation and can see that I'm able to get the games I want (not all, but most) - anybody can.

its the market.  shit flies the shelf at those prices.  there aint any boycott that i can see.  maybe if people would stop lining up outside best buy for game releases, they would have no choice but to lower prices.

you guys are blaming the publishers, when it really is the gamers who are fucking the rest of you.  thats a fact.

Okay maybe Blurays are worth the money but PS2 games had the same price- 1/3 more that PC game prices and imo they offered less.

PS2 games were never the same price as next-gen consoles like the 360/PS3. They were $50. Next-gen system games (most of them) are $60.

In fact, I remember being surprised at how expensive they were to a jobless 13 year old like me when the 360 came out in late December 2005.

Games around here are $70-80. In any case, it doesn't really address my argument.

Don't feel one bit cool saving money at all. That's the argument a lot of people use that are anti drugs, that it just makes the people look cool.

Who am I tryna impress when I download a new film or a song? Nobody, I did it for my personal enjoyment.
