Anybody here done any extended time at sea? I might be going out on a commercial fishing trawler for a month very soon and was wondering if anybody here could give any advice/stories on extended periods aboard a ship at sea....

Longest I've stayed on a boat is a week. I was the smallest and there was a shortage of beds so I had to sleep in the luggage compartment. My tip would be don't get stuck with the luggage compartment.

Nope, never more than a few hours, maybe a day.

It's something I'd like to experience though.  Once you get your sea legs you never lose them. like riding a bike.

The longest I've been on a boat is 2 months. I did however return to a harbor every couple of days. Fresh food ftw.

quiet the opposite really. If you work on the boat you won't have much time to do anything personal.

Was on a cruise (Explorer of the Seas) from Royal Caribbean in 2007.

Takes a day or so to get your sea legs, and when you first step onto land again, you feel like it's moving. It's crazy.

Yeah spent a month on a tall ship. Was fun.

Trawlers are pretty dangerous environments, in fact the most dangerous job in the UK is a north sea trawling job.

Rule 1

Do what your captain fucking says immediately. Literally.

Rules 2

Always wear your safety equipment above deck.

Rule 3

Don't bitch about your shifts, everyone gets the same shifts at some point.

Wow, I had no idea we had so many commercial fishing vessel experts here on bf2s.

I <3 the sea

EDIT: I do hold licenses to drive pretty much all boats out there. I have spend pretty much all my free time since I was 8 on a boat. Sure, I've never worked on a fishing boat, but the rules are the same on all boats.

It doesn't matter if you commercially fish or not, the rules of the sea are the same no matter what vessel you are on. I have my day skipper qualification so I atleast know the basics unlike a lot of retards that rent out boats but don't know how to sail properly.

I'm not expecting this trip to be that dangerous and the ship isn't that big. Afaik it's around the size of the one at the start of the Bourne Identity. Seas around the NT are usually pretty calm this time of year. A bit of wind but no ultra-shitty weather.

That is completely irrelevant, you do what your captain says straight away and you always wear your safety equipment on deck.

Im guessing your probably gunna be the cocky kid that fucks about. Just the kind of person you don't want on a boat.

Hey, I've watched 'Deadlist Catch' on Discovery for a few series which qualifies me as an expert.

Here are some generic tips:

If you're tired watch out because the crab pots are dangerous when they fall on you!

If you're tired watch out because some really big waves come sometimes that knock you over!

If you're tired watch out because sometimes the hydraulic crane-arm breaks and swings around and kills you!

Have fun fellow sailor

Mmm. Taking everything you say on board, just saying y'know, the seas we have here around the NT aren't nearly as tempramental or vicious as the seas north of Great Britain.

Given that my current sea time has been limited to dingy's and small, outboard motor powered boats, I'll be anything but cocky. I'm a bit nervous about the whole deal. Eager, but nervous.

I spent 9 years in the RAN Flecco, 6 of them were spent at sea (Including exercising off the NT coast).

First and foremost, don't drop the fucking soap!!!!!!  /JK

Keep your mouth shut, find out whose who onboard and do as you're told, sleep at every opportunity you get and have fun.

Take sea sick tablets with you just in case, the weather at sea can change rapidly and a small fishing trawler will be thrown around like a cork.

Good luck m8, you should have a ball.
