Israel frees jailed Palestinians

"Israel has released 198 Palestinian prisoners in what it calls a goodwill gesture to bolster Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. They include two convicted killers of Israelis who have been in detention since 1977 and 1979 and who are among the longest-serving inmates."

As seen in Northern Ireland, If a meaningful and lasting peace is to ever be achieved in a trouble zone like this then these are the kind of painful concessions that are necessary from both sides. In a protracted and complex geographical conflict like Palestine-Israel both sides need to let go of the goal of a crushing and absolute victory and accept that meaningful peace will only come through compromise because neither side is going to be leaving to go elsewhere. I can imagine how difficult this release is to stomach for many Israelis - we here in Ireland had to see much maligned killers from either side walk free - but it is a step forward, let's just hope it is not followed by two steps back (from either side).

It's a good step forward.

Well done Israel!

I think it's absurd that Israel chose to release proven and convicted murderers. Last I heard, Israel held some 11,000 palestinians in Israeli prisons. One would think that they could find at least a couple of hundred detainees who're either not tried or convicted of anything, or tried and convicted of lesser charges.

I'm not adverse to the idea of Israel releasing Palestinian prisonners who're detained by Israel on weak or no authority, but to release murderers to a nation who celebrate them as heroes, that's where my sympathy and support ends abruptly.

Presumably they have some reason to release those particular people. I assume the Israelis didn't pick names from a hat or anything like that. No idea what that reason could be though.

Can't say I didn't expect it. The first move was always going to come from Israel. Desperate people backed into a corner don't offer concessions without getting something they want first.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

GJ Israel on releasing those guys. But I honestly don't think the Palestinians will return the gesture.

The Palestinians don't have 198 Israeli prisoners so no I don't expect they will return the gesture. Let's at least hope it will stop unjustified rocket attacks against civilians for a while.

So killing civilians is sometimes justified?

Why would Iran care if Israel releases prisoners?

We're talking about Palestine and Israel, not Iran or Iranian interference.

Israel Kidnaps many Palestinians every day as political prisoners, they may have released 200 but that doesn't mean they have stopped kidnapping Palestinians and locking them up without charge.

Hats off???

not from me, there are more bigger issues than prisoner releases that haven't been addressed i.e. Palestinian borders, Jerusalem etc

Wow, so you can't see a peace offering when it is shoved under your nose? Give them some credit for trying, I know there are bigger issues but come on dude, at least something is being done.

The Palestinians have minimal influence at this point. Iran controls the violence.

You are saying that Iran controls things in Palestine/Israel as far as the militant end of the Palestinian struggle goes?
