Shit I could probably throw a 40mph ball when I was 9 too, back then even we had rules when playing these types of games to not throw the ball too fast/as fast as you possibly can. Don't ask why, I always found it easier to hit a fast ball than a slow one.

Maybe just let the kid play with a little bit older age group. It will be more of a challenge, and will keep his game sharper. Rather than slacking off on a bunch of noobs.
