how does it handle full screen high resolution videos? I heard Asus Eee 901 can't handle those well....

Are there any other alternatives?
Well for uni any laptop would do.

Igz look at my review under specs.

It plays 720p smootly but apparently 1080p stutters. But I don't see a reason to watch HD movies on it. Dvix and xvids look very good on it.

Also you can play FEAR on it and we all know how demanding this game is, its still used for benchmarks.

Cool

So, there are quite few of them. Which one should I buy. The only difference that I see is the RAM and the OS.

512MB vs 1GB
Linux vs XP

And the storage. The Linux version has 8GB SSD I believe. I've read that those SSDs in all sub-notebooks aren't very fast.
8GB just ain't enough for me since it use it for multimedia. 512 is enough for Linux, the distro is called Linpuss and it seems well supported. But I prefer XP, since I want to use winamp and its Internet radio + other software that don't work on Linux.

I don't know what's the 8GB SSD. But anyway, I want XP as well, and I presume with 1GB is will run smoother.

It's the most expensive out of the rest.

Now, there is HP 2133

It has 2GB, 1.2Ghz and 6-8 hours batter life. Yours is 3hours, isn't it?

So, I wonder which one to go for.

What do you mean its the most expensive? Out of all subnotebooks? Cos here its the cheapest. I wouldn't get HP mininote. Atom processor is superior than the HP's. I posted a youtube video review. Check it out.

I meant the combination XP + 1GB is the most expensive compared to say linux and 512mb, obviously

I will check the youtube in a min, playing CoD4 atm. Thanks

I have to step up and defend ASUS because as far as I am concerned, the EEE is the far superior machine when it comes to mobility.

Sure, the Acer that you have has a larger hard drive, but it's also mechanical. What if you drop that beast? Drop the EEE? Keeps on going (provided nothing else is broken).

I don't know about the 901, but the 900 handles full screen videos just fine provided you're running on mains power. I've yet to test my 900 with the battery. I think it MIGHT stutter a bit, but it depends on how big a file we're talking here. A normal 700mb movie rip? I wouldn't expect any problems.

The 901 also has built-in Bluetooth, longer battery life, and the multi-touch pad. The 900 also has the multi-touch pad and let me tell you guys, when you're sitting on the couch or in bed, that touchpad is fucking awesome. It's like having a touch screen, it really is.

That video with the nerd complaining about the Asus's keyboard, though, needs to be quiet. I have large hands and I can type perfectly fine on the EEE's keyboard. If you're a good typist on a normal keyboard, you can be just as good on the EEE. Within 5 minutes you're used to the keyboard and then from there it's just from practice and use. Just like any game. Think of it as a SMALL challenge, and I stress that - it's not a huge problem at all with the EEE. You learn by doing. That guy in the video obviously couldn't type at all because of the way he was complaining about the keyboards.

.Sup - you REALLY need to come to Vienna and we'll have a showdown: Acer Aspire One versus Asus EEE PC 900. I guarantee - I'll win the mobility war. But if you want a tiny computer that can do everything a desktop can, yours probably wins. But only because of the HDD.

But the SSD's in the EEEs are not that slow. I have a 4GB SSD running XP Home and it doesn't hang. The 8GB SSD installed in it is fine, too. I wouldn't run Windows or Firefox on it, but it runs everything else just fine. It just has a slower write speed, but the read speed is fine.

Asus is also coming out with a huge new selection of EEE's with conventional HDDs soon. They're already for sale in China and Taiwan, so it's just a matter of time.

Warranty is two years so if HDD fails in that time period it will get replaced, after that its time for something new. Heard those SSDs are slow. EEE has a 6 cell battery but it makes the lappy thicker and more expensive. Vienna will be visited in couple months when my sexy boss gives me some free time.

Edit: now kiss me

Hahahahahaha

Europe got screwed on the 900, though. We all got the 4400 maH battery whereas the USA got a bigger 5600 (iirc that's the exact size).

The 8GB and 16GB SSD's are slow, though. But the stuff in the 1000 and the 4GBs are not. There are faster SSD's out now that Asus is incorporating in its new line up that should launch sometime at the end of the year. No idea when it'll make landfall in Europe, though. Everything takes so damned long to come out here, I don't get it.

Actually, Asus is Chinese ...

But the 900A (or 901? I can't remember) is supposed to be getting built-in 3G through T-Mobile sometime. They announced it on the T-Mobile Germany site, but no idea when.

There's a guy named JKK (www.jkkmobile.com) who has a touchscreen 900 (lot of folks do), with 3G installed, I think GPS, and a few other things. Dude is a mod-master. Really cool site and has the newest stuff on the UMPCs.

Ye I know but new tech goes to Japan first. And I've seen JJK's vids. He makes cool reviews, has the first EEE and 901 I believe.

Yea, he has all the EEEs. He did a quick video of the 900A, too. Not too impressed with that computer, much less the Linux Xandros distro that comes with it. That's one of the EEEs where you get what you pay for with that lower price.

How much did you pay for your Acer? I got my EEE for €382 shipped.
