Thanks everyone for the input.

One other thing - although I'm planning on getting a 2x1GB kit, my bro wants to know if it would be more worthwhile to get 4GB. He'll be running 32-bit XP and the GPU has 512MB of memory, so he won't use the full 4 gigs. I think just sticking with the 2GB would be better, but I'm not 100% sure so I thought I should ask here.
What would be better: 2GB of 4GB? And would 4GB be better in 4x1GB sticks, 2x2GB sticks, or is there no difference?
In theory, 4x1GB gives more memory bandwidth, due to the simple fact that there are more connectors on the RAM. However, not all chipsets like having all four slots occupied. Since ultimate performance isn't a have-to, I would go for 2x2GB, and a 64bit OS, above all.

Also, why the hell get an 8500GT with 512MB RAM? That's a total waste. Check if you can find one with 128 or 256, as that GPU will never, ever use the full 512 effectively.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

No. A quality 500W is more than enough for anything, except for the super-top-end. That computer will run fine on that VX450, and will have plenty (40%+) to spare.
NO. 500W is not enough for anything, might be enough for the setup he is planning as of now but i'm sure he is going to upgrade further later on thus why I said I wouldn't go for anything less than 750W.

http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psuc … orlite.jsp might give someone a better idea than '750W just to make sure.'

But I'd skip the 8500 and go with a 4850 if he plays games at all. Might be a bit over twice the price of the 85, but it's my gamer reflex.

And just for reference, I am running my system off a cheap (quality though) 500W PSU. And that includes one HD, 8800GT, highly overclocked 8600GT and a highly overclocked E2180. I am sure I could SLI another 8800GT here too.

Understanding power supplies is hard, but I am sure a VX450 would be plenty for this system.
