Coloured CL's can be harmful to your eyes if you are buying cheap knock offs, bad product, or overwearing your contacts.  (especially the crazy eyes kind)  It's the surface of the lens that causes the damage.  Alot of the crazy looks (ie. blackouts, cat eyes, spirals, fireballs, etc...) are constructed in a way that puts the color onto the surface of the lens.  This "rough" surface is against your cornea/sclera.  Your blinking constantly rubs off a layer of your eye/inner eyelid.  Corneal abrasions = not good / very painful.

That all being said, I wear a pair of fireball, or white outs to the TX Renfest each year with my costume.  I wouldn't condone wearing them as daily wear, but once a year... the risk is pretty low.

Please bear in mind, the average coloured CL (Freshlook, colorblends, etc.. ) are generally pretty safe.  I found the Freshlook for astigmatism to be particularly uncomorftable for any length of time, but I have a steep eye.

Feel free to post optic Q&A to me.  Marco is also particularly knowledgable in the fields of optical workings.

KJ
Yeah, if you buy from a well-known brand and wear them VERY sparingly, it's fine.

I still wouldn't take the risk though, as I 1) want LASIK when I'm 18 and 2) want to be a pilot/join the USAF so I need perfect vision.

Pos.  Based on your ethnicity, I'd say wait a bit before lasik.  Your profile didn't give me much to go by.  Asian/Afro-American?  Wait till 22.  Higher probability for growth stability.  As for the USAF, I thought DOD prereqs are 20/15 -20/30 non correctable?  The Shuttle Pilots are prereq 20/25 corrected.  Let me know if I'm incorrect please.  post ref if possible.  (important for work)

I had posted something on Yahoo! Answers...lemme get it.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index … 800AAZ39IV

Since May 2007, flight school candiates in the USAF are allowed to have had PRK or Lasik eye surgery to correct thier vision.

But you vision, still has to be better than 20/50 without contacts or glass's.

And atleast 20/20 with contacts or glass's.
Recruiters came to my school in April and I asked them too. They said something very similar.

I plan to go to college (or enlist in the AF at 18 and study at the CCAF...still don't know yet) and get my Bachelor's Degree in Aeronautical Science, so waiting would be possible.

And it's PRK that my optometrist said I'd need to get (somewith my eyes), not LASIK. My bad.

And I'm white.

They are decent ones, from reputable high street shop (not the internets) and they cost me £30... so they better be fucking good... :s

I'm also only wearing them out his one night- and will not be using them past the recommended 30 days. So i reckon i'm pretty safe. 1st time in tonight and its itched to buggery so far- but have managed to resist the urge to rub eyes cos It'll just make it worse, am gonna keep wearing each night for a bit til fri to get used to them. And I have astigmatism in my left eye too, but atm they are both as itchy as each other.

Also- at the age of 16 I looked into going into the RAF as heli/jet pilot and was promptly refused as I do not have 20/20 (or 6/6 if you like metric) vision. So now i'm a lab rat instead.....

Yeah sorry Ben0, I wouldn't worry about damage or prolonged irritation because of those contact lenses.

I was more so just asking a question on behalf of myself about contact lenses and the coloured / fancy-dress varieties. I may get contact lenses sometime because I'm tired of wearing damn glasses . Plus I don't want to look into laser-eye treatment until I'm at least 21 for money reasons and time reasons. I think my problem is that I view contact lenses as a complete substitution for glasses but really they're unhealthy and potentially even damaging if you wear them for such prolonged periods of time.

Thanks also Pos, have taken something away from this thread that I didn't know and hadn't bothered to look into before .

Contacts aren't damaging if you 1) give your eyes rest from them at times and 2) take them out atleast an hour before you go to sleep every night.

If I can get contacts when I'm 10 and be fine with them for 6-7 years, you can get them at...whatever age you are.

I've heard that wearing coloured contact lenses for long periods can make you go blind in some cases.

When my optometrist asked if I'd like coloured lenses I say no way. I bought the clear ones that surprisingly cost more. lol

Most of the major brands of colour CL's are safe to wear.  You must still follow the general rules concerning responsible CL wear.  (Don't over wear, clean em, don't swap em, if they tear - 86' em)

As for going blind in coloured CL's worn for long periods of time, this falls under the "general rules" of wearing CL's.  Over wearing CL's promotes growth of bacteria and protein buildup between your eye and the contact.  These growths, left unchecked, have the potential to destroy your vision permanently. (note: Potential)

If you just maintain proper care of your CL's (coloured or not) it shouldn't be a problem.

Some chick thought I had blue eye colored contacts...  Oddly enough it was a kinda hot waitress at a gold star chili, where as most of them look like men except that they have a saggy tit hangin out.
