I found this on engadget and it is a console being developed which will (apparently) play any game from any console!
From the looks of things they are still in really early stages of designing it and the usual stuff they need to do before it is released.

Lets hope it does happen though.
I think it would be a benefit for the 3 companies. Most of them loose money on the consoles sold for the first few years except Nintendo. So they are making there money directly from sales of software. And if people bought this surely software sales would increase as people can buy any game they want.

But on the negative side it would make console exclusive games pointless.

yeah but they loose that money initially expecting that eventually the cost will spread out over a certain # of consoles and eventually be profitable... not just so they can get software sales.

I REALLY doubt they would let this happen, unless they got a good chunk of money in per unit sold. After you included paying each of those companies, then paying the company that actually produces this thing it would be too expensive for most people to buy, sales numbers would be low, and that would drive the price up even more.

Its not gonna happen.

What some one needs to do is build one that runs some kinda OS, and then has basically an "emulator" for their own type of games, and maybe license mame for it or something, then just leave it open for people to do what ever with so that the community can do all the copyright infringement stuff.

Basically a cheap hand held that does nothing to stop (and even encourages) people to "hack" it, so that you can use it for what ever emulators you want.

Anyway, I'd rather have a laptop (or sublaptop if I wanted something small) and just buy a cordless gamepad.
