I am buying a laptop before I start university. I have a budget of £700. I have looked around and I have found the Dell XPS laptop to be quite good despite peoples opinions of them.

Please tell me what if you think. And if I can find a better one for the same price.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'd get the non-glossy screen (non-TrueLife) over the glossy. I mostly just find glossiness annoying, with everything reflecting off of it, and the colours seem a bit over-saturated on most. There are no really big advantages of it, either. If you're planning on using it outdoors, non-gloss is really a have-to.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

The advantage is movies look more colorful.

Sounds like a good deal to me, if you wanna play games on it every now and then. I prefer very LOW budget laptops, for no more that 400£. But then no games on teh kiddo!

I think the colours look more over-saturated than good. Semi-glossy is ok, but the kind of gloss on Dell and Acer laptops is just over-glossy and bad.

Well I can't change it non glossy so I will stick with it. I will not be using it outdoors. Mainly in my room.

That's a great system, if you can though (assuming it's a m1530), switch the screen to an LED backlit one. It should still be the same resolution that you picked out. Much nicer IMO.

Congrats on the purchase though.

It's just a quality panel. Gloss doesn't do miracles, if you put plastic film on a 1999 LCD, it ain't gonna be no 226BW.

Ever heard of filter? It doesn't do miracles but its certainly enhances colors. And if they look over saturated then it was an idiot who set up the monitor settings.

A good panel can do fine without gloss. It's often used to mask cheap disaplays.

Those guys aren't smart enough to change those settings. Believe me.

Plus, it's very common, even Wikipedia says so.

Well my experience is glossy screen> matte screen at least when I look at my monitors. I always wanted a glossy desktop monitor.

Not a bad price ... definitely worth consideration - although do take a look at other laptop manufacturers to see if you can get a better deal (eg. HP, Sony)

I did have a look but I found all of them to be the same price with less specs or better specs for more money.
I have had a look on PC specialist website. That is quite good but as its a fairly new company in making laptops I have a feeling I will buy it and after a year of the warranty expiring it will die. Mainly I believe this because the longest extended warranty they offer is 2 years where as Dell's goes up to 4 years.
