How can you get so vexed and outraged over a flag, and people's opinions of the entire fiasco? All you Americans say that we Euro's have no national pride and blah blah... no, we're just rational and reasonable. We've had flags for half a century and they're no Goddamn big deal. They're symbols of the country but not direct encapsulations of what the country stands for. The Stars and Stripes represent America but I don't really see why they have to be treated as if they are the physical-forms presentation of liberty, democracy, freedom etc...
And Kmarion, your point doesn't really make much sense. I already commented on the ridiculousness of our sporting fervor earlier, and don't tell me Americans are laidback in approach to their football / baseball / basketball (etc.etc...) support
.

Again, it represents our country. It's the symbolic representation of the United Kingdom. But it is not some holy artifact that requires worship; we wave our flags at football matches so everyone knows that we're 'x' country and we are united in support, we don't wave them to proclaim "Look! We are the UK! Aristocratic gentry and Imperialists!" And when I say "symbolic" I mean purely in the literal sense- as a
symbol, an image, a representation.
