Barrack Obama has denied claims of sexism after likening his rival's promise of change to putting "lipstick on a pig". Obama said Republican John McCain's outrage was "phoney", a diversion from debating real issues. The controversy began on Tuesday after Mr Obama said his rival was advocating change while pursuing the politics of the current Bush administration. Mr McCain's campaign accused him of smearing running mate Sarah Palin.

So much for this election being all about a certain politician continually playing the race card. It seems Sarah Palin is happy to cry and bitch and moan whenever any comment with the slightest reference to femininity is made.

Anyone who has given out in the past about Obama and the Democrats supposedly playing the race card cynically at every opportunity must surely see the parallels in this incident. I say Sarah should grow some balls and toughen the fuck up. I didn't see her complaining when McCain made the same comment in reference to Hilary Clinton's policies...

Easy Irish.

She can wrap that lipstick around my dipstick any day.

Bottom line, McCain and co. are eager to jump on anything that they can use on Obama. Remember Obama. You can't say his full name. You can't say he's black. You can't disagree because to do so implies you are racist.

Their attempting to use this figure of speech against him shows just how foundationally challenged the republican platform is.

That's the story. This is the clinging to bitter issues and empty rhetoric Obama was talking about.

Palin is a religious nutter. They have a million quotes they can use against her without photoshopping pictures of her.

Is election is pathetic.

Are you saying he actually said she was a pig with lipstick on? Because I think you'll find he was talking about the Republicans campaign being the same as the Bush administration's.

If he had said "you can't polish a turd" would McCain have said Obama was calling her a piece of shit? I think this says more about what McCain thinks of his running mate than what Obama thinks.

hmmm... well the crowd seemed to start laughing right away.  even one lady had a shocked face.  so it seems everyone thought he was saying it except him then.  either way.

So you are saying he implied it?

That would give Obama the right to infer race in whatever comment he detects it and yet it is an outrage to you when he does this. That's double standards.

And how come it's okay for McCain to use this famous old expression?

oh will you stop.  obama has never used that expression before since i have been hearing him.  you know what he was saying.  and yes, it WOULD give obama the right if he detects something.  has he?  did palin say something?  how about mccain?

And here's me thinking "Lipstick on a pig" is just a popular saying/idiom, and not a personal attack.

It was a jab.  A poor one.  The dems just keep making it easier.  It wasn't about sex at all.  It was bash on her character.  Palin basically said that she was a pit bull.  Obama likened her to a pig instead.  And then wasn't even man enough to own up to it...  Who's the real bitch?

And there's you being right about that.

In the OP video it's McCain using the same figure of speech.

She needs to grow a set of testicles or have been through the menopause. When McCain croaks do you want someone who gets 'a bit emotional' once a month holding the nuclear codes? Never trust anything that can bleed for several days... and live.

The candidates will do whatever they can to control the news cycle.  Especially impotant for McCain, now that the media is completely against him.  As long as poor 'lil Sarah doesn't have to answer real questions, they have much better control over their image.

She's ready to be the VP but she can't handle a reporter or two?

Well it seems from the reactions in this thread that those on the right like to cry about certain 'cards' being played just as much as the 'whiney liberals'. Interesting...

Obama makes a point of preemptively saying that the Reps will make an issue of his skin colour thus playing the 'race' card.

When Obama uses a famous turn of phrase that has a vague reference to femininity the Dems make it out to be a dig at their female VP candidate thus playing the 'sex' card.

Both sides as bad as each other as usual and no one sees the double standards... quel surprise!

At least that article sticks to actual issues, I can respect that. This 'lipstick on a pig' bullshit is pure nonsense for the idiots and white trash to gobble up.

Okay, I do not think any regular here has any doubt about my stance, politically, or where I stand in this election.

That being said, I think a lot is being made about nothing.  "Putting lipstick on a pig" is an actual saying (at least in parts of the south).  I have heard it before.  It means that trying to pretty up something ugly (a pig) does not make it stop being that thing.   The pig in this metaphor is not Palin, it is the Republican party.  Palin is the lipstick, in this case.  It is actually a back-handed compliment of Palin, if you look at it sort of sideways, implying that the person who blogged this may consider her to be slightly better than the average Republican.  Then again, maybe not.

Actually, the comment was kind of clever, and sure to resonate.  Still, I think this is a non-issue.  And this is coming from a stalwart anti-Obama person.

Totally agree with you that this is a lot of being made about nothing. I'm tired of this back and forth bickering about petty stuff like this. Both sides need to get real and start lying to us about proposed policies.

from sme link:
"When you listen to Obama, it sometimes feels like you’re hearing a smart but distant analysis of the political scene. He sounds like a writer or teacher, but not the leader of a political crusade. Obama has been far too “meta” – a detached commentator on his own situation and his own country. Voters want an action plan, not an exegesis."

Dude is right on spot.
