My brother just ordered this new computer that we're building and we have the motherboard in.

I'm hooking up the front button pins (power, reset, etc) and I seem to have them hooked up as best as I can distinguish and when I turn on the power stitch and then press the power button, it starts up for 5 seconds and then everything shuts down, and then after two seconds it start again and does the same thing over and over.  I tried the red(voltage?) switch on both sides and on either mode it did the same thing.

All I have the PSU connected to is the motherboard.  The computer doesn't beep or anything.  Do I have a bad PSU or did I not attach the front panels correctly?  I also can't use the reset button at any time while it's on.

Now that I look at the reviews, that thing is pretty horrid actually.

This is the motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813138075

and this is the link to the manual for reference to the front button pins:

Disconnect all the case pins and fire it up with a screwdriver.

Way2go richard.

Instead of using the power switch, disconnect all the case pins and use a metal screwdriver to connect the two pins that the power switch is supposed to go to.

I think .Sups idea is that the switch is broken and it's constantly held down, or open. That could cause a computer to turn on and off after a few seconds, I don't know if it would turn it back on again though.

Turns out the E8400 I chose is incompatible with that board without the BIOS update to support 45nm processors.  According to one of the reviews, it power cycles on and off without making a noise like it does now.

In that case you will need to get a 65nm CPU so you can flash the bios

Wow a smartass. I said never mind so he wouldn't destroy anything. If he hasn't done this before then I don't recommend him to do. He should observe how its done first. I don't want to get blamed if theres a short contact. GG

It's fixed, we used my processor because although it didn't say so on Newegg, the board supports 800MHz FSB processors, meaning my 540 Prescott.

Took us until 9 P.M. to realize that we could've just safely used my processor.  Unfortunately, the tech guy gave us the wrong disc so we couldn't install XP Pro until today.

As for the E8400 that is now in it, that processor alone halved the startup time of the entire computer from when my 540 Prescott was in it.  That's absolutely insane.  In addition to that, it played two of the later Madness series videos on Newgrounds without lagging and without the CPU fan even speeding up, I couldn't even believe it because I've never seen a computer that didn't spin up when playing a Newgrounds video.
