Ok, well for the past couple weeks I've been slowly working away on a home based Web/FTP/File/Torrent server, and I decided to try to install the BF2 server app to go with it.

Well I've finally got everything configured and I need some people to help me CrashTest it,
This is a really measly box with a crappy Internet connection, but I hope that in the end I'll be able to state how much bandwidth and power it takes to actually RUN a BF2 server, here's what you'll (hopefully) be playing on:

Dell Latitude C800
850MHZ PIII
256Mb RAM

100+ Kilobytes/s UP.

So this is a Bottom of the line Rig that can barely run the server, but I consider this to be a good testing platform to rate how otehr home server enthusiasts should rate.

I Expect it to pull MAYBE 4-5 Players, the limiting factor, of course, being the Up speed(Being Canadian, we don't get the Wonders of FiOS out here, the closest equivalent in speed costs $150/month)

So come on in, play for a bit, invite some friends, and let's see how much it takes to crash/bottleneck this thing

Server IP: 70.79.5.224
Server Port: 16567
Password: <none>

PB Is off, FF is Off, I don't really mind if you use hacks(ever heard that before ) But NO CTD HACK

The Current Map is Jala 16 but I can change it to any map by request.

Damn, I was fiddling with Bf2CC Setntings and Crashed it, to the point where The server's running, but noone can connect to it and BF2CC Can;t send a command to Stop the server and I launched it in a way that dumps the server files into a Black Hole" of sorts.

It should be back up in 10 mins

Yeah, totally, I just rebooted it, problem is, is that teh Netwrok adapter's fucked, so after you reboot, it takes 10 minutes before it goes live again

Kay, Crap, it's finally back up, I messed up my BF2C config so it refused to launch.

Oh That's great, I should pay more attention, I have BF2CC Open on my other monitor, and I glance every couple minutes at it, and I didn't catch yoo

Now we just need like 5-6 people to go in at once.

Edit: Seems BF2CC crashed so it didn;t report user connected.

We highly recommend Battlefield 2 servers are run on dedicated server
platforms. Currently, the best performance is on a machine with the
following specifications:

WINDOWS

- Minimum Specification, based on playing a 16 player game:
  CPU: 1 Ghz
  RAM: 384 Mb

- Recommended Specification, based on playing a 64 player game:
CPU: 3 Ghz. For AMD Athlon 64 CPU: 3500+ (2.2 Ghz)
  RAM: 2 Gb

- Optimal Specification (as of Patch 1.3), based on playing a 64 player game:
Only run one instance of BF2 per physical CPU with Hyperthreading disabled
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 4800+ or 3.66GHz Xeon.
  RAM: 2Gb per physical CPU

BANDWIDTH

- Minimum
  2.5 Mbit

- Recommended
  5Mbit

As always if you can increase any of the above hardware you will
improve your overall gameplay experience.

FIREWALL

The use of a software firewall on the server is not recommended,
as it can adversely affect server performance and the overall
gameplay experience.

ORly?

I read somewhere else that it's something like 20Kb/s startup, then like 30 on top for each player. Maybe my Bandwidth ins;t my limiting after all...

As far as Ram, yeah, the machine's straining, it has 256MB, Rebooting the server and launching BF2 leaves ~51MB Free(~198 taken) and for each person that goes through the server is another 1-2 added.

I've only managed to get 3 people(Game-Monitor reports it spike to 5 for a minute or 2, then down to 0 when I accidentally hit the restart button)  to play at a time, and at that point the ping averaged 99-101ish, so not too bad, now granted, these measurements were while I was Remote Desktoping into my Windows PC on the same network(Macs Don't support BF2CC)

I'm actively working towards getting a newer server box, but being a 15YO High School student with no job, it's not exactly easy to scrape together pocket change to pick up a new server.

You can probably get some P4 with 512MB RAM for free.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Okay, i guess it's "technically" a different game, but i ran a Sandbox server on my laptop once.... about 3 people on, and loading up objects would crash it......

Not sure what happened there, but Game-Monitor tells me the server's hit 20 people(lies?) and a more believable 5 for about 30 minutes, unfortunately, I wasn't there and can't confirm.

So far, largest confirmed number was 3 Online Players and me on LAN, the 3 others averaged 150 ping, and I pinged 1
