Had look at my motherboard to make sure I could use a 4870 if I bought one, and then looked at the specs for the card:

#  PCI Express® based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard
# 500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (600 Watt and four 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
I have a 500 Watt PSU, so no problem there, but what's the two 75W 6-pin PCI power connectors?

Means it requires 2 PCIe power plugs.

So I take it these connectors come with the card, and I just insert them into the corresponding ATX/Whatever slots?

Those should come from the power supply and plug in to the back of the card.

They also come with the card.

How many 12v rails does your PSU have (read the sticker)?

The molex adapter comes with the card.

Er...the PSU is a discontinued Honli one, 500 Watt.  I'll need to open it up to see more.

That one might be ok, but why not just buy a new one? They aren't terribly expensive, and if you are worried about this one, but one that you won't worry about.

That thing isn't even gonna run a 3870, let alone a 4870.

Indeed, lol @ 20A.

Buy a new PSU before yours implodes.

I'm going to end up making a thread about how to install a PSU next.

Alright, found something I can afford.  How's the Coolermaster Extreme 600 Watt?

I can also pick up a SHAW 720 Watt for 30 dollars, but I don't really trust that.

20A on +12V rail? I wouldn't install a 4870 on that fo' sho'...you'll need a better power supply than that I'm afraid.

I say CM RealPower Pro 550W unless it is seriously overbudget.
If you can't afford it, go Huntkey Titan 650W. Other ones in that list suck pretty badly. MSY has a bad supply of PSU's.

EDIT: If you can't stretch for either, ToPower 500W should work too.

I guess I can get that.

Ergh, this is getting pretty damn expensive.

It's still only 19 amps though...is that enough?

My picks have multiple 12V rails which all have the same amps.

Do you add the amps to get the total or something?

Because I have a feeling that I'm missing some bit of information.

PSUs are complicated. You can't just add up the amps from all 12V rails to get total power, but technically it goes so. Efficiency and quality also matter when deciding which PSU to pick.

That 500W ToPower will quite certainly be enough for the HD4870, and ToPower is pretty quality company (for example OCZ PSUs are made by them) Won't blow the budget either.
