So yea I got a call today from a friend(Who is a landlord.) to rent me an apartment for $400 a month with all utilities paid including internet and cable. Its around 700 square foot and has all the kitchen applences. But, here is the down side. Its in a fairly bad area and its part of a double. For those who don't know what a double is. Its a house divided in half structurally to make 2 separate apartments instead of one house. What do you guys think? Should I go for it?
Depends how bad the "bad area" is. Personally I wouldn't want to live in a bad area of town, unless it is your only option. I lived in a duplex when I was younger, although it was on an Air Force Base, so the people living next to us weren't really a "noise" problem.
do it.
get a CCW and a shotgun....good to go.

You see many doubles in Italy, pretty common.Naturn wrote:

They are not that bad, a friend of mine has a double.
Of course he gets complaints every week end for parties but still.....

ugh...bad neighbors suck. But you can get them no matter where you live...so...it's a good deal, take a chance. If you decide you hate it you can always move.aerodynamic wrote:

Well the area is a low income area. The landlord lives next to me and were friends so I don't forsee anything happening. But, i'm just worried about my property. I don't have much stuff so its all I got. I just don't want to come home one day and find it all gone. I've been thinking of getting a hand gun anyways so this might give me a reason to get one.(92FS FTW.)
I don't see how a handgun will change your chances of coming home to your stuff being gone. But if you would feel more secure by getting a gun...go ahead.
...
first off, 92FS FTL.....seriously. 9mm's make me a sad panda.Naturn wrote:

second, dont fire that inside....unless you want to seriously piss off that friend/landlord.
I might advise, an alarm system would be safer to protect your house than a handgun you carry while being somewhere else.

If it is not FiOS then I wouldn't bother moving there. Not worth it.
the best alarm system ever.....Sisco10 wrote:

I wanted to get a just to get a gun. I had no plans on using it for anything but the occasional trip to the firing range. And yes i'll be getting an alarm system too. I don't need a powerful gun and I won't be shooting it off inside the house anyways.

@naturn...if you have to get a 9mm, at least get a SIG. 92fs sucks...unless you can get an old military model.
Alarm and dog, better than a handgun.Naturn wrote:

shotguns are THE weapon of choice for home defense.

Gawd, you guys are so american. Shotguns for when you're at home, and automatic-pepperspray machines when you're away? Jeez, it's only a matter of time before you start with sentry guns
I've lived in Houston and Oslo, and we've always had an alarm system that phones the alarm company, who sends the police. That + gold-plated alarm badge on the door and most people won't even attempt to enter.

So it says 350 on that page....is the 400 the price with utilities then?
Also, what an odd setup...people have to go into the bedroom to use the bath?
Other than the odd setup, the pics look like the place is in good shape.

sadly, a lot of police departments here wont respond to those alarms anymore cause of all the false ones that wasted their time.Jenspm wrote:

the nice ones will just fine you, but some wont even bother responding...
and jens, you know where i can get any sentry guns?
But then you're at risk of spys..Jenspm wrote:

Yea I just did the math its a little over 500... maybe 515. Still its a good deal.
The bedroom is in the middle of the kitchen and living room. The hell?
Anyways, 350 is a pretty good deal for a one bedroom. Studio apts near campus are like 450ish around me. Depends on how much bills are and which ones you pay. If you have electric heating and you pay the electric bill it can get really expensive.

The price point and actual place looks pretty good. as for the neighborhood, get yourself some better locks perhaps some bars on the windows if you're really worried and consider investing in an alarm system. You should be fine, if all else fails have the crook look down the barrel of a 12 gauge.
A bad part of town sucks, but you're paying for what you're getting. With increased rent, you see better parts of town and more square footage, as you already know. I guess take what you can get, just be reassured that you'll be moving up to something better eventually.
