I got myself 4 80mm coolermaster case fans, as my case has 4 outlets/inlets.  It's a crappy case - has no front air intake and only two side vents, fairly close to the rear of the case and two rear vents.  I decided to put in the fans when my core temp of the cpu (e6400) started nudging 71 degrees at full load.

Blue denotes a side vent with a fan attached.
Green denotes a side vent with a air funnel thing attached leading to cpu.
Top red is the CPU.
Bottom red is GPU (ASUS HD4850 with Glacier cooling fan)
Rear black boxes are case fans.

Note that the funnel does not actually sit squarely over the cpu, and same with the air intake leading to the gpu.

My reasoning:

The additional red part here is the hard drive, but it runs relatively cool.

However, the core idle temp with 3 more fans still rests at around 49 degrees, and under load levels out at 68 degrees (only 3 degrees better).  The actual cpu temp (case temp) levels out at around 62 to 63.  The fans are hooked up to the PSU using molex, so they run at full speed constantly.

Where/how (in/out) should I position the fans?

Should have a front fan to move air forwards.

Put an exhaust fan right on that vent by your GPU. That will remove all the warm air settling underneath your gpu (which would eventually rise up to the top of the case).

Put an intake fan right in your drive bays so that it can bring cool air in.

What case is it exactly? I have one that looks exactly like what you're describing.

Generic imo.

Yeah, it's generic - something called "Honli ATX" something series.  The only upside is that it's aluminium (but painted, so that sort of insulates anyway).

you've got to get some air in the front, put at least one of the fans either above or below the HDD. i have just assembled a P4 system with an older generic style case & there were two 80mm fan positions at the lower/front.

note if you take out more air than you put in, it creates a slightly negative pressure inside the case which encourages dust to hang around so it's better if you can keep the pressure differential at least neutral by keeping intake & exhaust airflows similar.
