Hey, I have just moved into my new house at Uni. My house mates and I choose to get Virgin Media broadband (Up to 20mb). Anyway its all set up and works but works like crap. Gaming is currently out of the question. Pings to servers can vary by 800ms and we are getting alot of packet loss. I have to following screen shots that show what Im talking about. Can anyone give me an idea as to what's going on?

sounds like your router needs to be properly configurated.

need more info about your system and all your gear that you have connected to it.

If you guys are paying for this you should phone the company and have them fix it or at least guide you through it.

Wireless?

If so, first make a wired connection to the router and see if the issue persists.

Is the connection to your house fiber, cable, or twisted-pair?

If it's DSL, call up your ISP and ask if they're experiencing capacity issues in the area, and to check the noise on your line. It looks like it could be either, or both.

I think its cable, one dark piece of metal.

Hmmm ...

Cable is often a shared source connection, so if you have a few next-door neighbors doing lots if internet work, it can clog your connection ... you will know this is a problem if the problem is random (mostly an issue in the evenings and weekends ... less prominent late at night).  Nothing you can really do about this.

If it is twisted pair, then it is possible that the installer did not terminate your trunk at the street ... this causes an electrical reflection that disturbs connectivity.  Corroded connection terminals can also cause noise that affects performance.  If this is the case, then your problem will evidence itself 24/7.

But, it could also be that there is some congestion within the Virgin network.  The only way to know this is to have a Virgin tech do a trace from their tech center to your computer, and they can see if there is a congestion point in the network.

If I were you, I would contact tech support.
