Okay well I've had my dell vostro 1700 laptop for almost a year now, it barely crashed for that whole period. But now its taken to freezing everytime it comes out of sleep mode, any idea why guys? It acts normally, lets me log in, then when I move the mouse the whole thing freezes, ctrl alt delete doesnt work. The only thing I can do is hold the power button to turn it off. Any idea why? I've updated the BIOS, drivers and all of that. I'm hoping its not a problem with the memory, as I have 2 x 2GB sticks, costly to replace (for a student)
Probably just time for a reformat. The sleep feature has always been a bit buggy, so it's probably just taken the plunge. If you've had it for a year, you should reformat anyhow.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. 1) Backup all your important files somewhere else(EVERYTHING, Pictures, Music, game saves, etc) don't forget to backup your NETWORK DRIVERS you;re fucked without them.
2) Make note of all the "Special: apps that you won't remember the names of(WinSplitRevolution, so important yet I always forget the name)

5) Go have a cup of tea, when you come back it'll probably ask you for some more info

cheers, where are the network drivers?
They'll either be on a disc that came with the laptop or they'll be pre-installed, in which case you'll have to find out what they're called and download them, from dell's site or something.bennisboy wrote:

guys help me. I reformatted and installed the os again, but it wont boot up. It jus gets to the vista start up screen with the scrollin bar near the bottom. It jus stays on that screen until its switched off or shows a system32 error. I've tried runnin system diagnostics from the start up bit, but it shows no errors. It did a load of hdd tests to see why it wasn't bootin up but showed no errors. I booted from the dell vista cd and it shows that the os has been installed as the hdd is no longer empty. I dunno what to do! The hdd is partitioned into os and recovery. Recover hasn't been formatted. Help please!
Long shot, but try replacing your ram. It sounds like a hardware problem.
Before reformatting did you run a full scan disc to repair any errors on the hard disc like bad sectors?

Yeah i ran a disk check n all that, it repaired a few errors. I cant afford to replace 4gb of ram as a uni student! I do have a spare hdd lying around tho, so i might try that. The uni pc techs are gonna have a look at it for me 2moro tho. But without it i'm screwed! Gotta write my cv n do course work!TheAussieReaper wrote:

oh also i dont think its a memory problem cos i ran all the memory diagnostic checks and it found no errors. Well there is a dell repair centre jus a ten minute walk away, so i might have to take it there.
go to search, type in sleep mode, there are several threads on here about Vista and sleep not working, and some pretty good suggestions in the other threads about what to do

Surely thats part of the problem, you still have an old partition on the drive, i was always informed to delete all partitions and make new ones (if required) with the new format of the drive.The hdd is partitioned into os and recovery. Recover hasn't been formatted. Help please!

There seems to be a lot of people with this problem from searching google, but no-one appears to know a definites solution . I'm not gonna be home for hours as well, got footy trainig after lectures
My experience with recovery partions is that you get that instead of an actual OS install disc, then you create a recovery dvd/cd of your own and restore your OS from the disc you created.bennisboy wrote:

damn you dell. I now know its not bootin cos i have to reformat the disk usin dell media direct cd, but i left the cd at home in london. Who would have thought such a minor soundin cd is needed! Apparently its cos the hdd is partitioned into 3, n it needs the cd to do it properly. Gonna get my dad to mail it.
Woo, did it. Was up for ages sortin it! First I reformatted again, then reinstalled windows AGAIN, then got the BOOTMGR error, then launched system repair from the vista CD, then launched startup up repair from the boot menu, then used the dell factory image restore tool. Now I have 48 vista updates to install
