i play at 1680x1050 and my screen quality (an Lg) is really awesome.

Ill only be playing bf2 and BF3 when it comes out, not interested in crysis etc.

Oh and also command and conquer series of RTS games (if thats what they are).

I cant decide between

4850 1024mb (£20 more than 512)
4870 1024mb
gtx280

i want my system to last me for 2 years so i can pick up an i7 when they have matured.

the rest of the kit is going to be

https://150db.net/files/finalsystemspec.JPG

I already have

corsair 580w modular
antec 900 case (for sale)
Razer Deathadder
Saitek Eclipse
Razer massive mousepad thing.

Ill use onboard sound as i have a dac for my hifi which takes optical and coaxial digital inputs.

my budget is upto £1k

what to get ?

thanks.

the cooler is mainly for noise reduction, as i keep the pc on downloading whilst i sleep!

Get a Thermalright Ultra-120 extreme or HR-01 plus.
Get a 4870.
HDD Cooler?

edit - for noise reduction, suspend the HDDs in some elastic, much more effective.

I have 2 of those. Its not about silencing or cooling the HDDs that much-it has short-circuit protection wires. My maxtor died once cos of short-circuit.

I doubt that HD cooler would have helped much
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

How exactly did "static in the air" cause your maxtor to die?

And how, asumming it was, did having said maxtor mounted, via screws, to the case, which itself is grounded cause it to not be grounded?

Even it wasn't screwed in, if it was connected to your PC, via a cable (power or data), it was grounded.

And if it wasn't screwed in and wasn't connected to your PC, again, how, exactly did "static in the air" cause your maxtor to die?

Don't call me nub, gay.
It wasn't screwed since it has rubber pads for mounting nub. And that wire is a bit more reliable than the screws.

Now i could be wrong... but because of the CPU his getting wouldnt 4870 X 2 be overkill? and a 4870 be more suitable and cheaper?

Don't know why he has a 1k budget, yet is only spending £50 on the CPU...

My e5200 is at 3.75GHz atm and could do more if it weren't for my mobo

Is a 5200 that good an overclocker? Even with just an 800FSB?

when you're OCing you want a low FSB, high multi chip. The e5200 has a 12.5 multi which makes OCing a breeze even on average mobos. If you're at 1333fsb you're already running at 4.1GHz.

Sure, the max OC on a e8400 on air might be slightly higher (200-300MHz) but it does cost way more. You can even crank the voltage without feeling bad about it, because if you break your chip after 2 years, you can just throw it out instead of crying over your extreme edition CPU.

What kinda cooling would you need for it then? Good air or LCS at minimum?

Some guy over at ocforums hit 2.7 with the little pitiful stock cooler. I'm using a Alpenföhn Groß-Clockner (mainly because it was cheap and available) which is pretty good, but still a couple degrees warmer than a TRUE-120 and get 48°C @ load @ 2.75GHz @ 1.3V. The thermal paste hasn't even set properly yet. The 45nm chips are mainly Vcore limited, not temperature. You shouldn't go above 1.4-1.5V if you want your chip to live for a while

I might rebuild my PC right now and try again to sort it.

Check levels off the slabs etc.

Yeah, I will.
