Windows Media Player issues

So this started a few days ago, I keep getting "Windows Media Player has stopped working" error, but WMP was never even started :\

Now when I try to watch TiVo programs loaded onto my computer (in .tivo format) it wont play, it will immediately crash

This is really pissing me off, I havent done anything recently, havent installed anything in days (besides updates, but I googled and this has been an issue since the start of the year for some people)

Now I tried to go download WMP 11 again to repair it, but apparently the one ive downloaded is less recent than im running (How is that possible??)

Help? If I get my Blu-Ray drive will this problem fuck things up? (supposedly WMP has better HD quality from what I hear)

Id use VLC if I could too but it wont play .tivo files

.tivo is just a codec, perhaps reinstall it. I use winamp to watch .tivo files

Go to Add/Remove Programs, then Windows Components, uninstall Media Player, then install the one you downloaded from the MS site, should do the trick.

If not try using VLC media player instead.

You cant remove WMP in Vista for some reason

Yeah ill try that to see if its totally messing up WMP, but I doubt it, Ive been using .tivo files on WMP for a long time with no issues, but I will download winamp thanks

(or download the .tivo codec for VLC)

What should I get for watching a blu-ray movie if my WMP is messed up? Winamp?

VLC has mediocre playback at best (does not use codecs), you'll be fine with WMP with the codec sorted out.
Not sure why people get so excited over VLC, its shit tbh.

It's a decent fall back solution, I don't use it as a primary media player, it just plays the odd thing or two that WMP wont.
