Hello all, recently I've started playing my friend's electric guitar. It's so awesome, I'd really like one for myself. Now my problem is, I know absolutly NOTHING about guitars, so I don't know what's a good brand/price etc. I'm on a tight budget though, so I don't know, is it possible to get a very decent electric guitar for less than €150, preferably a set (including amp, carrying bag(not necessary), plectrums etc) so I don't have to go through too much of a hassle. Keep in mind I'm a total newb at playing guitar though, so treat me like someone who's never even held a guitar before.

Thanks in advance ;D

Edit, forgot to add, I live in Belgium, so keep that in mind. I found this one already, but it's probably total crap O.o

I've started playing the electric guitar maybe one and a half year ago. I got a two tone sunburst which I got for £100 back in the days, my bag (a good one) was £25 and my amp £150 (decent one)

If I was you, I'd put lots of money into the AMP. You can always switch to a better guitar later on. If you take a teacher, ask him so he'll probably help you to find you a good and cheap guitar.

Plektrums are cheap, most expensive £1 and the rest 50 pence.

Hope I helped you. Any questions - ask me

For good tabs check ultimate-guitar.com

Naw, I'm not going to take a teacher, because I want to learn at my own pace, and I believe there's enough guides and whatnot on the internet. My friend has loads of music books too.

For what should I be looking in a decent Amp? Is it the watts, because seriously, I have no idea what makes a good amp O.o

Do you mind if I ask how old you were when you started(one 1/2 yr ago)?

Right, it's good that your wanting to learn on your own, that's how I learnt, and I've been playing for 4/5 years, and I'm 18 so I'm not too bad on the old g-tar. Your best investment is the amp, go for a high wattage, 50+ watts, and you'll get a good sound. You will find that you will buy a guitar and then after a while you will want a new one, hell, I've got 6 now. Bags aren't essential, but if you are wanting to take it round your mates house then you might wanna get one. Decent amps are pretty cheap, and I advise you to get a basic guitar 'cause you don't wanna spend £500 on a guitar then 6 months down the line find out that you don't wanna play guitar any more 'cause you will lose a lot of money on the guitar. For plectrums, eBay it, you can pick up hundreds for not a lot of money, they sell bags of 500 and so on.

Again, any questions don't hesitate to e-mail me on cam__my@hotmail.co.uk and I'll be more than glad to help. Ecilop Murof has the right idea for the tabs, ultimate-guitar is a great site, and learn tab, you can pick it up so much quicker than notation.

Good luck.

I was 13 and half. For a decent AMP, man, I dunno. I just looked for a known brand (mine is Roland, maybe take a look at your favourite bands live videos and check what AMP's they have (but they're also mostly expensive). It really depends what you want. If you want to play in a band, you need more watts (mine works with a small band and it has 30 watts) or if you want to play alone for your own.

What bands do you listen to?

PS: Just don't only learn by tabs. I hate to play in bands just because they mostly use notes and I fail at reading them.

If you learn it now, you'll love you later.

I listen to a lot of bands, but the bands where I really listen to the guitars are The Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Zornik, Green Day, Metallica, Anti-Flag, Kings of Leon.
I'm not thinking of playing in a band (yet), maybe if I'm a born talent for guitar, lol. At the moment I just want it to be able to play my favourite songs and appreciate the music even better. So my amp doesn't really have to be loud, I'd just like a decent sound.

I think I'll start with the basic guitar, because you're right, I might be sick of it after a few months. Any suggestions for a basic guitar and a decent amp?

And one more question about those plektrums. I heard some people play without them, what's the (dis)advantage of doing so? And do plektrums break/wear off easily?

That ebay tip is great, and so is the ultimate-guitar site, I'm already looking up some of my favorite songs lol.

Not using plectrums allows you to finger pick, but you won't be doing that to start off with, plectrums are made for strumming, people can stum with just their fingers, but it hurts like a bitch when you're not used to it, you will notice with time that the tips of your fingers on your left hand will start gettin really hard and thick, which is a good thing.

I mean, for a basic set up to start off with here what you're looking at equipment and price-wise.

Haha you wanna see mine, I play bass as well, thicker strings=thicker skin, I can stick them over a lighter and stick pins into them haha. Although, 'cause my left wrist is all damaged and weak, playing guitar hurts like a bitch sometimes, so I would recomment getting a stress ball or grips and building up the muscles in your hand.

That's not a bad starter set
Here's what I've got

There's also an acoustic bass, but it's not in the picture.

Starter leccy, pick up a Strat/Squier Strat if you havn't the dinero for the full fucker.

15w personal amp, leads + bag, and you're all set.

Don't worry about fancy pedals, or infact anything expensive at all until you've got the hang of guitar.

Good starting guitar, i started with one. Clean sound, easy to play, nice balance.

also... DONT BOTHER SPLASHING OUT ON A MASSIVE AMP YET, JUST GET USED TO PLAYING.

i still have my 15w trainer amp from like 5 years ago, and it does the job if i'm just practicing in my room.

This is probably a stupid question, but why do you need 4 different electric guitars? Is the sound, or the feeling that different ? Or is there another reason, just curious :p

Thanks FatherTed, I'll see if I can find an offer somewhere

Two of them are electric guitars, the tiger-skin one and the pink one are my basses, the black electric is my electro-acoustic. I buy new guitars 'cause I like the feel of a new guitar, and often some are easier to play 'cause they just feel different, different strings, easier to press down, more control over the sound of the guitar using the knobs etc.

All down to prefernce, and you can be a dead smarmy bastard if you have a £1500+ guitar, which I'll get for my 21st

Just Googled reviews of benton guitar, they seem okay apprently, although they do fall down in terms of build quality, but at the end of the day you're not gonna get a blinder for your budget.
