Go for good old American oppressio during the 1800s.

12 Years a Slave, by Solomon Northrup.  It's not a government-oppression lesson, but its pretty fucking brutal.  It's about a freeman in pre-Civil War USA who gets kidnapped and spends 12 years as a slave before regaining his freedom.

How about The Great Gatsby. Gatsby is oppressed, in a much more sophisticated way than any book detailing governmental travesties. Your teacher will love the deep analytical skills required to make the connections.

^^^ good book, really depressing story.  I just got done rereading the Sorrows of Young Werther and The Stranger while out in Joshua Tree.  I think I am in an emo-book phase.

Next up is Andrew Bacevich's Limits of Power.

A second nomination,

Ugly, by Constance Briscoe.

Oppression, but not in the "normal" sense.

Try "Night" by Elie Wiesel. I did that book for my 30 level English diploma exam and I got a hundred on it suprisingly
Its about a Jewish boy who ends up in aushwitz then other concentration camps with his father after his mother and sister were taken away and liquidated by the Nazis. Then it gets really tragic...I won't ruin the rest.
Yeah, basically the whole book is him talking about the conditions of Auschwitz, I read it Freshman year in my highschool, scored 97 on the test out of 100...

Its an easy read and how much more oppressed can you get?

Try reading it.

Crap tbh. His writing is odd and very rambling. Though I didn't read all of it of what I d read there was very little intentional government oppression. Most of it seemed to be just poverty.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

Mein Kampf is actually a pretty good read; that is, if you're trying to get into the thought train of Hitler to try and even partly understand his mentality and reasoning. Of course if you read it from a perspective of critical or literal analysis, it will probably fall flat - Hitler was not a Nobel Prize winning author or a Booker Prize winning novelist. As far as understanding his political ideology and personal attitudes goes, Mein Kampf is quite a good read to be honest .

I wouldn't say that oppression is a theme though, especially (on the assumption) that the English project requires an example of the narrator or central protaganist being oppressed.

Tbh would you expect a well written, coherent piece by one of history's most infamous mad men...

1984 and animal farm are the best.
I really liked 1984.
One of my favorite books have to say.
Fahrenheit 451 is really good to.
Well the author didn't really mean to write about an oppressive government but about media but it still works.
