Looking for a new hard drive as my raptor and old seagate are nearly full.

I've heard lots of good things about the spinpoint, but the WD drive has twice the cache (32mb) which is surely better).

So basically...which one should I go for?   (Price isn't an issue).

I'm partial to WD, but all I can say in defense is personal preference.

Yeah, I've had good experiences with WD stuff (I've got their 'mybook' external hd too).

The 'Black' range is supposedly very good...

I will put it out there: it's just a HD!

Well, I don't have any personal experience, but it's supposed to be fast and quiet (and cheap). Here is a review for you.

Nah, I only really need 500gb. I'm just using it to install Linux and as my main media drive.

I have about 100gb of media but it doesn't grow quickly - no big files like films so 1TB is probably unnecessary.

The F1 is cheaper, so get that. In my experience the 2 drives are very similar

I don't think the Caviar Black Series comes in 500GB, only 750GB and 1TB.  The regular series (blue?) does though.

I'd recommend WD, I use a 160GB IDE one and it works great.

I hate western digital.

All the western digitals (like maybe 2 or 3, ages and ages ago) broke really quickly, so I stopped buying them.

Spinpoints are very silent and mine works flawlessly. I do not have any experience on WD black series. At least spinpoints are cheaper.

Samsung F1.  I have a 750GB in this at the moment, and it's great.

F1: Warranty: 3 Years

WD: Warranty: 5 Years

But if you're just getting it for storage, I guess that won't matter.

good you got the samsung F1

i have the exact same model and its runs great and quite, Samsung hard drives are reliable, for me as i have had numerous over the years.

also 16Mb cache is alot for a 500MB HDD.

Also Ebuyer is cheaper than overclockers in general and on this item

In 3 years there'll be bigger faster cheaper HDDs, maybe even a whole new interface standard to upgrade to.
