Taken from another site in reply to the story of a kid dying from a "pellet gun", whose mother is trying to get all paintball/airsoft guns banned.
I think in a way these sorts of things happening are ironically tied to the "anti-violence / anti-gun " parenting style which is all the rage these days

Because of gang warfare in the 90s, there are a LOT of parents that dont want to let their kids play violent video games, handle toy guns, or even learn anything abut guns.

It's a far cry from when a lot of these people grew up (like me).

When I was 10 I lived in the NWT and I was shooting a 22 calibre rifle with a 18 round magazine at targets. I also got a pellet gun to go around hunting grouse and ptarmigan. Then when I moved back to BC when I was 14 I got another pellet gun.

Part of getting and having access to the guns was demonstrating that I knew about gun safety. Learning to never point the gun at anyone even if it wasn't loaded, learning that it wasn't a toy and that it was a weapon that could seriously hurt people.

Learning to respect the device.

Many kids these days wont get that sort of education from their parents because their parents refuse to discuss these matters with them. Schools won't touch it with a 10 foot pole (In the NWT there was actually a grade 10 hunting class trip - shooting caribou with a .308 and guarding the campsite from grizzlies and black bears on fire picket!).

So the result is now we have kids that when they get their hands on guns, have no idea what to do with them think it's funny to go shooting them at people and houses and cars, paintball or pellet guns or airsoft guns. I also have a distaste for calling it a "paintball marker" because its really a gun- it launches a projectile and that just waters down how dangerous the device could be if used improperly.

Anything that resembles a firearm should be treated like one, that's the way I was taught. All kids, even if they dont ever get a paintball or pellet or real gun, should be taught gun safety.
What do you guys think?

I think he makes a good point.

Since these kids have absolutely no knowledge of anything related to firearms, they won't have the slightest clue as to what is safe and not if they come in contact with one.

IMO, I think over-bearing parenting is definitely ruining kids these days. It not only applies to guns, but to drugs, alcohol, and a bajillion other things. I can immediately think of a few friends (well, ex-friends) who were brought up completely straight-edge, parents were ridiculously over-bearing, then suddenly they go to college, or hang out with a different crowd, and the flood gates are open and they're exposed to all this shit all at once. On one hand they don't know what to do, on the other hand they've been told to be against it all their lives, so of course they're going to taste the forbidden fruit. These kids in my example were brought up as religious, hard-working kids, and now they're either in jail or rehab, or out on the streets stealing shit because drugs and alcohol ruined their lives. In my case, my parents have taught me and my siblings to be careful and do things in moderation, but have never been blocked from anything. I think I turned out fine, I'm not a complete stoner, alcoholic, and I have a strong set of morals and ethics.

All in all, these dipshit parents who want to ban everything are the ones to blame. They can't accept the fact that they failed as parents, so they want to get rid of one particular problem, and not the source. Besides, as soon as they ban one thing, another will come along.

Yeah, you dont hear about too many stories like, "Avid teenage hunter dies when firearm accidentally goes off"

He makes a good point

I think that Sex Ed and basic weapons training should be a class, or at least something like the 1 week of sex ed for gym class that we had freshman year

Whereas it shows what guns can do, how to check for rounds, how to make sure the safety is on and whatever... Just how they do sex ed (Show pregnancy & diseases, how to have safe sex)

I didn't know you were refering to a specific game. Tbh, running around dark rooms collecting shit = a fair few fps games.

Yeah...it's even worse since it's Canada.

Just say "gun" and people freak out.

I like guns myself, but besides the people who I paintball with, everyone thinks that automatically makes me obsessed in a bad way.

Totally.

At this point, say "USA" and people say "Gun" THEN they freak out.

Although, I must say, I grew up Russian and over there you don't really have much to do with guns till you hit 17 and mandatory army service, but moving here my moms ex was a gun bigshot and he took me out a couple times, taught me the basics, how to load, how to shoot, don;t point at anybody, ever, etc.

But yeah, I don;t think Hunting or guns should be offered as a course in school, but it should be discussed and the basics should be taught BY the parents.

I shot my first real gun with 6. Ten thousands if not hundred thousands of rounds later, I still haven't killed anyone. The moral of the story: Teach your kids how dangerous guns can be if handled improperly and teach them how to shoot safely. If you don't know how, go over to your nearest gun club. I'm sure they can help

Or maybe it's just us from central Switzerland. We're the local rednecks

While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Yeah, fearing guns is retarded.  They are tools--simple machines.  Respect them like any other powerful machine, and you'll be fine.  Every person should learn the 4 rules of firearm safety.  If you don't desire to go any further, fine.  At least you would know enough not to kill anyone if you were to handle a firearm.

I am amazed at the widespread belief of "gun owner = dangerous person."  I know most people would never admit to such a ridiculous belief, but their comments reflect that assumption.  I recently bought a rifle case, in anticipation of the rifle that I ordered.  The guys in the dorm across the hall IMMEDIATELY started making jokes about me going on a sniper rampage.  WTF?!  They know I am on a competitive marksmanship team.
I knew they were joking around, but it started to piss me off after a while.  Perhaps they don't realize one of my friends was murdered by such a lunatic.  I may not get noticeably angry, but I deeply resent the implied comparison between myself (recreational and competitive shooter) and a mass murderer.

I'd be willing to bet the parents who take the "omg guns are evil, my kids will never even touch one" approach don't know firearm safety themselves.  Their refusal to educate themselves so they can instruct their children endangers their whole home.  Sad really.

I suppose I am a bit of a weirdo when I say this:

But we do need strong gun control laws and people need to be educated on gun safety.

Another problem with society is that parents aren't doing their job anymore. They're relying on schools and teachers to do their jobs. WRONG. The only true reason that we have these problems (school shootings and disturbed teenagers) is because no one ever addressed the problem that these teens went through. Instead, people addressed their OUTLETS for anger and frustration (video games and guns). So instead of giving them a healthy instruction in how the world works, how to deal with emotions and how to punish fuckheads who torment their fellow man, people are just ignored both at school and at home.

If parents would step up and do their job, this problem wouldn't exist. It really wouldn't.

guns can kill people, so can circlular saws, angle grinders, knives, chainsaws, cars, trains, electricity, fish, fungi.

seen as they can injure people mame them and/or kill them does this mean they should be banned no people just need to learn if you use things incorrectly things can soon go wrong.

My mum encourages me to drink...

She says as long as you learn to drink in moderation and its nothing special, then when you hit 18 you don't go over the top with excitement.

Same can be said about guns, so long as you learn about safety and everything while you are still young, it sticks with you.
