Thanks to everyone who replied, you were all extremely helpful. I was already looking into civil and mechanical engineering to begin with, and with room to grow, they seem to be perfect.
Also, hearing that enlisting in the NG before college will help greatly with tuition is a big boon. I am very likely to go that route. ROTC just doesn't sound right for me.

Well then it's a big FUCK YOU to their faces, considering they're paying for my college tuition anyway. If I do that, I'll be on my own financially.God Save the Queen wrote:

of course, but paying for college isn't going to be easy without a good job.God Save the Queen wrote:

FEOS, does ROTC pay for college?
I know the NG does, but thats if you want your 4 year degree to really be an 8 year degree.

I am going to major in Engineering. I am a junior right now. I don't really prefer one field or another since I like all of them, and am not extremely good at just one. So I want to base my major off of job opportunity and potential job growth.
1) What field of Engineering did you major in?
2) Do you think you made the right choice? Are you happy with your decision?
3) Is there room for you to grow in that field (or have you reached the top)?
4) Annual salary (feel free to shoot me a PM or don't answer if you don't feel comfortable)
5) Are there many internships available?
2) Yes and Yes
3) Yes there is, You've got Civil (structures, bridges etc) Environmental and Transportation (right now i'm getting a B.S. in Environmental Engineering, this is under the Civil Engeeniring field)
4) 65,000$
5) Yes there are, For one summer I interned with Burlington Northern Sante Fey Railroad, Montana Department of Transportation and Pfizer Mines. Your advisor at your college can help you get an internship.

i think ROTC covers most, if not all of itGod Save the Queen wrote:

i could ask one of the AFROTC or army ROTC kids in my hall, if you'd like

thanks for the offer, but i really doubt i'll pursue it.cowami wrote:

essentially, it's more specialized mech engineering

not a lot of job opportunities though.cowami wrote:

you'd be surprised, especially now that car companies realize that aerodynamics improves fuel efficiencyhaffeysucks wrote:

in all seriousness, there are jobs outside of the aerospace industry, including naval design (gotta make them submarines and boats sleek), civilian space programs, hell, even toy design
plus it helps that many aerospace engineers are approaching retirement age

i'll think about it, i got timecowami wrote:

Currently in Western Australia School of Mines (WASM) studying mining engineering.
1) What field of Engineering did you major in?
Mining
2) Do you think you made the right choice? Are you happy with your decision?
Yup. So far.
3) Is there room for you to grow in that field (or have you reached the top)?
Lots of room to go many places. Possible to reach the top, possible to change into many things to do with mining/metallurgy/geology/surveying etc..
4) Annual salary (feel free to shoot me a PM or don't answer if you don't feel comfortable)
A very large amount. Getting a job straight outta uni can give about AU $80,000 PA, so i've heard.
5) Are there many internships available?
Yes. Summer vacation work is big here, and encouraged especially in this field of work. You also get paid fair amount. ~ AU$15,000 for 3 months summer vacation work.
Come down to Western Australia and do mining eng (or minerals eng).

That's a really good point, Cowami. In the US, there will be a shortage of roughly 40K aero engineers in the next generation (if I remember correctly).
May I ask why your parents decided to forbid you from pursuing a college scholarship/career choice?

He wants an engineering degree... It will be pretty close to that anywaysGod Save the Queen wrote:

Mechanical ftw. Get to play with WAY more cool shit then others.
(and aero is the uber-cool version of that, we has a turbine out of a mirage f1 in our engineering building )VicktorVauhn wrote:

- Char... I mean US Air Force (My first choice, wasnt accepted because of traffic tickets and past warrants)
- US ARMY (Fully-loaded, Mack Truck/Clean Up Crew)
- US Navy (My bitches)
- US Marine Corps- Semper Fi.
I'm an only child, I think you can figure the rest out for yourself.RAIMIUS wrote:

I can only speak for AFROTC, but I think it's common across the services...God Save the Queen wrote:

If you qualify for a scholarship it does. Plus, you get a stipend after you go through field training (ie, boot camp) between your sophomore and junior years. And most upperclassmen qualify for some sort of scholarship, as well.

Im talking about the stribng of deployments that will make getting a degree on time impossible
If you want to try to convince them otherwise, there are several groups which would be very happy to discuss your parents' concerns. That assumes you really want to pursue this. I don't know how important it is to you.haffeysucks wrote:

How old are you? If my parents told me I couldn't join the military I'd give them a big fuck you, they should support my decision. Military life is hard enough with the support of family, never mind without it.
And if you're getting degrees in engineering you're not going to be on the front line getting shot at all the time like you parents might think.
Just some of the time...
