Some mysterious stuff has showed up on some of my hard drives.

My I: drive (external mybook) has a file called ~!~ie6.~!~ with ~!~ as the file type.
My J: drive (external also) has an empty folder called msdownload.tmp.

Both files are 0kb, and I am currently looking for more mystery files on other hard drives. Google shows them to be related, as they are both related to ie6 but ~!~ is not searchable. Is this a virus? I haven't tried dling or installing ie6. I hate ie and use mozilla.

Running a virus scan can never hurt, but it sounds like temp files. You should be able to delete them without problems
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Cool thanks. Virus scan came back clean. I'm gonna delete the files, but have no idea where they came from, or why they were on two separate external hard drives.

Have you been downloading stuff? If so, a torrent's start as some weird file names.

Could be temp files from Windows Update.

The ~!~ just means that however the file was created, it was named ~!~ie6~!~ and someone put a dot before the last ~!~ so Windows thinks it is a ~!~ file. That does not mean that file type exists. My suggestion is to just delete it, if it is 0kb then it probably isn't very important.
Not to mention they're on his external, so if it was important it'd crack the shits if it wasn't there.
