OK. A girl at work told us that there has been an abandoned  Porsche on her street for the last 4 months or so. Of course this immedeately got my interest. I asked her to take a photo of it with her camera phone as she didnt know what model it was. I was expecting it to be a crappy 924 or 928, but sure enough it was a 911 targa. This suprised me as that car is actually worth a bit of money.

Our immedate thought was that it was a stolen car that the locals havent bothered to report. But when my work friend rang the cops about it, they said that it hasnt been reported stolen and that the owner lives many suburbs away. And since its parked legally on her street, they had no interest in it. She has said that several people have put notes on it asking if they could buy it, however these tend to decompose over the months it has been sitting there.

This is roughly what it looks like ( minus the whale tail spoiler , plus cooler mags)

I would hate to see it sitting there and slowly rotting for years to come, govt depts will just ignore it and hope it goes away. I am not going to steal it, but I would love to have a hand in either .....
1. getting it back to its rightful owner , or
2. Legally getting it into my garage and looking after it.

Any thoughts?

I applaud you for your humanity in this, but honestly, it's not your problem. Something tells me trying to lend a hand will cause trouble for you in one way or another and will, in the very least, give you headaches.

I'd personally forget about it and move one, but I'm a cynic and a pessimist.

4 months really isn't anything. I'd wait out another year, then try to take it by whatever means you feel like(Legally I suppose)...

Thats the problem, the police wont give out the contact details of people, and neither will the dept of main roads, so its very hard to trace the owner.

You are right, its just that I am a car nut and hate to see a good car turn to crap for no reason. To be honest , my motives arent totally selfless, I would give it a good home in a second if I could legally.

You can't get info on the owner with the license plate over there? Over here in Fin, one can just type in the license and sms it to a certain number. Bleep bloop, and you'll have the owners name in you cellphone.

You can't take the VIN number to the DMV? That's odd, I would think if you went to the DMV you could do something and find out at the very least an address.

Call a P.I. and get them to found out for you. Might cost couple hundred but they should be able to get a phone number.

the 914 is not so bad but they should have just called it a volkswagen.  the biggest problem they had was vapor locking alot. not the sexiest porche by far, but still a decent car.  aka poor mans porsche

914= damn fun
Light + small + midengine + targa top...

My friends mom had one, and he was driving it around for a while. He wouldn't let me drive because the transmission was old (even though he was a terrible driver and was harder on that thing then I could have been if I tried )
He couldn't even drive it well, but even from the passenger seat you could tell how much damn fun it was... it responded to all of his inputs perfectly (even though most of them were rubbish)

People bitch "ohh thats a volkswagon" and complain about the looks... but who cares who makes a fun car? The looks kinda grow on you after a while.

Bottom line they are light weight nimble little cars with no roof that are a blast to drive around in.

Actually I think you may be right on this one. It seems to weird that no one has claimed it or reported it stolen. Probably be there for a lot longer.

I think we arent allowed to find out so that road rage incidents dont get traced to peoples homes.

Ready for the answer!

Do the following.

Make a paper sign that says "This car has been reported as missing, but i assure you it's parked on the owners land".

That will stop the 'concerned citizens' and will buy you much more time.

Now, keep waiting and waiting and waiting, no one will steal it because it's got the sign on it.
If the sign is removed then you know the REAL owners visited it. (in which case you cant steal it)

If after a long enough period of time, the sign is neither removed nor is the car stolen by someone else, YOU steal it.

No one will miss it.
