Using this sound byte from the Wall-E movie for when Windows XP starts on my EEE PC:

Kinda childish, but I saw the movie tonight and my girlfriend and I thought it would be the funniest thing.

I'm good with the simplistic "ba-ding" sound Vista HP has..

The sound on my EEE is hardly ever turned on, though. Cha-ching!

No, the best Windows startup sound is the Windows 95 theme.

I suppose if you like it, enjoy. I once had a Mortal Kombat sound scheme for Windows. Open a program, "Excellent!". Start-up, the original MK arcade tune. Close an app, a ghoulish scream. Got a tad overwhelming, so I switched back to default, but the MK scheme will always be there.

I cringed just listening to it

Haven't watched the film yet, might go download it today actually. But you've almost put me off ever wanting to watch it

It's a really good film. One of those movies you can just smile at the whole time.

I used "Welcome to duty commander " for a while. Now I have all annoying windows sounds disabled.

I want something similar, guess I should change my startup sound.

If it hasn't come to the English theaters here in Vienna, then no. And I keep an eye on what is coming to the theaters.

I uploaded the sounds for you and others who want to use BF2 sounds instead of Windows ones:
http://515.neonatus.net/arhiv/Sup/BF2/Sound/
You need to go to control panel>Sound and audio devices>Sounds tab>program events>change "start Windows" (i think, its been a while since i used sounds) with the sound you want to use.

Overruled. The best startup sound was the Welcome to Windows 98 tune.

Not much these days but on a Pentium II you really noticed the difference.

I gotta look up how to disable the Vista orb on boot... It takes fucking ten seconds to load and  another 5 to execute... For no real purpose!
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
